I tried Canson XL Mixed media paper and decided it was too rough for graphite. So now I’m using Canson universal sketch. My drawings look good on it, but I don’t like how thin the paper is. It’s 65 lbs. So I just ordered some Canson XL Bristol Vellum paper. I’m sentimental about Canson paper because that’s what I used in my community college drawing classes. I’m going to try out more types of paper from Canson.

I make landscape drawings with graphite sticks and blocks. Arches is good but I have now settled on Saunders Waterford; it’s 100% rag, mould made and does the job well for me. In contrast to what’s said above, I do use the rough as I prefer the tooth and I dislike the ‘slidey’ characteristics of hotpressed (hotpressed is great for calligraphy however). It depends on the degree of photo-realism you are after.

For larger drawings I also use Fabriano from a roll (Fabriano Artistico). To begin with this was a choice based upon what I could get on a big roll, but I’ve come to know it now and have only good things to say of it.

PLEASE how do I make these dreadful yellow things go away? OMG there's even more of the awful things now.

Can you use painting canvases for a drawing surface. Is there anything that needs to be done to the canvas prior to drawing?  Thanks in advance.
