I like the color harmony. The volume is there and correct, The strokes are also interesting, but a bit messy (you can be painterly without the messy feeling)
On general, I think it is in a good path of growth since it shows you obviously got several concepts handled well.
"no no! You are doing it all wrong, in the internet we are supposed to be stubborn, inflexible and arrogant. One cannot simply be suddenly reasonable and reflexive in the internet, that breaks years of internet tradition as a medium of anger, arrogance, bigotry and self entitlement. Damm these internet newcomers being nice to to others!!!"
"If brute force does not solve your problem, then you are not using enough!"
January 8, 2020 at 6:57 am #929632I believe that you got great advice from the most experienced artists.
I am still learning but in MPO, composition is the most important aspect of an art work. No matter how good or bad the strokes are, how light or dark are the values, etc., composition should be the first thing when it comes to do a still life like in this case.
The point of a composition is to pull the eye of the viewer across the painting, taking in individual elements to finally focus on the main feature or focus of the painting – this could be anything from subject matter to emotional effects. Compositions are created by the artist.January 8, 2020 at 6:26 pm #929641” Maybe you could be more consciously suggesting the form with the stroke direction?”
This makes so much sense to me! I’m tempted to redo the painting with this in mind. Now i understand the point of “randomness” in the brush strokes. They fly off in any direction.
January 12, 2020 at 12:25 am #929634Obviously you know how to paint. I think the colors are too similar all over the place. I would make the background colors of the wood more gray and dull, so that they would bring out the bear even more. I’m trying to figure out what that gray box-like object is to the left though. Is that part of the chair? I think this is a good painting, but you can make it a lot better. You picked a great subject matter, and this painting can really work. Just change those background colors though, it would greatly take this painting to a whole different level.

I tried what you said in photoshop and completely agree. I varnished the painting the same day that I posted it, so I’ll be sure to try this the next time I paint this subject. I have a few other compositions in mind.
Edit: The gray box is the base of the lamp that the bear is leaning against. It’s a paper lamp with a warm bulb in it.
