I know this thread is mad old, but this thread still pops up in google searches about gouache and related stuff, so I figure that people adding in their recommendations n stuff wouldn’t hurt!
I use a mix of M. Graham, Holbein, Schmincke (Horadam), and W&N. I use these four brands cuz of the lack of opacifiers and fillers (allthough W&N admitted that for some transparent colors they add fillers to enhance to opacity, so I only use the Titanium White from W&N.) The other three are pretty good for brands that lack opacifiers.
Other brands I’m fine with are Da Vinci and the much cheaper MIYA Himi. Da Vinci is pretty good for the amount that they offer for the price.
I’ve always wanted to try Royal Talens Extra Fine gouache, and I plan on buying it when the chance comes. Anyone have any opinions or experience with it? It looks satisfying to work with, and I also love the design of the tubes lol
April 1, 2022 at 9:47 am #1464945Yes, old thread but I have not been able to log in to WetCanvas for about three years :-). I do wonder why people who want transparency in their gouache don’t use acrylic or one of the acrylic gouaches (acryla gouache) instead? It seems to me that the opacity is not a bug, but a feature.
May 1, 2022 at 6:09 pm #1468735Does anyone know if you can use M Graham Gouache with other brands or does the honey binder make this a difficult task?
May 1, 2022 at 7:57 pm #1468742Yeah, M. Graham gouache is fully compatible with other brands of gouache! The honey binder doesn’t make brand intermixing difficult. I use MG gouache with three other brands of artist grade gouache, and even tried the Zinc White with cheap watercolors to make gouache, and it worked just fine.

Ok so in October 2021 I bought six RT Extra Fine gouache tubes, color selection based on Bruce “handprint” MacEvoy’s “Secondary Palette”. I absolutely love this gouache brand. It’s so smooth to work with and it glides off the brush just nice. This gouache is also opaque enough for what I’d classify as “above average” gouache. Heck, it might just be artist grade, but in between the fine artist class (M. Graham) and the designer’s class (Winsor &Newton). Highly recommend this gouache.
August 18, 2022 at 3:06 am #1482148I am using Holbein Irodori winter set on A1 size flower painting at the moment. I am used to using Winsor&Newton and mixing my own colours and had run out of them. I found a new ball game with Holbein as their colours are so different and has taken me a while to get used to them. Texture is great and colours bright clear and vibrant. I am not a fan of their white though and it is a large white flower. I had been given a large tube of Art Spectrum and have had trouble with it as it was thick stringy and gluggy maybe it is old?? It also is shiny and not mat. I am waiti g on delivery of W&N titanium white but am very tempted to buy Daler Rowney as I like their colour gouache paints. I dont know about their white. It is a commission and I want to do my best for it. I am also a fan of Caran Dache studio pans but not for a commission as they dont say if they are student or artist quality. Any input on best gouache wiuld be appreciated. I will post picture when finished.
