There are so many great paintings here! I’ve had to be careful not to look at them before going to sleep as some are quite creepy. I’ll be back to comment more when I can. For now, I wanted to share my painting. It’s also one I did for Inktober.
I drew this in ink then photocopied it to paint with acrylics like the style of my reference. It’s definitely not my standard style, but fun. Almost like creating a coloring book page.
It’s from a picture in a book of a 1505 medieval artist’s take on an event from Roman time of meeting the Bagradas dragon. Apparently it’s supposed to be from a German translation of Titus Livius’ “Roman History.” Reading the account (I guess the Romans even sent something of the dragon back to Rome), I don’t think the medieval artist quite captured the actual type of creature the Romans encountered. However, the artist did draw something interesting. The editor of the book that contained a photo of the medieval manuscript mentions what was drawn resembles a titanophoneus potens. While sketching it myself I found I also saw similarities. Interesting how the medieval artist could do that. What was that artist’s drawing reference?

October 23, 2023 at 3:35 pm #1530050Ok, the references didn’t show up, so 2nd try …
October 23, 2023 at 3:38 pm #1530052Ahh, the new glitch is that you can only have one image in a post. Here’s my last image… Reference at the top playing with the idea of similarities between the medieval monster and a titanophoneus potens and my painting and ink sketch below that.

October 23, 2023 at 11:10 pm #1530086Carl — Thank you for the challenge this month! Yours is well painted, and very creepy. Thanks for your comments on mine. A coloring book is a fun idea and, yes, you really do have to wonder what was wandering around in the wilds back then.
Christel — Great idea to do Komodo dragons!
Merri — Those old-time pressure cookers were definitely monsters!
Cindy — Happy Grover! Love him over the fog.
Colin — Your Minotaur has such a wonderful ethereal look to it.
Tereza — It looks like your creativity is alive! Very creepy spider monster.
Maureen — That looks like quite the worm to avoid!
Kay — I also see things in the cracks! Creative take here. (Thanks for taking November’s challenge! I was panicking thinking I had volunteered for it and wasn’t sure if I’d have the time. Soooo glad you’re doing it!)
Virginia — So great ones! I love the vibrancy of the colors and so creative with everything.
Mona — Glad to see you playing, too! Very cute dragon.
Old Hobbyest — Well painted, especially Poor Yorick.
Michelle — Took me a moment to see it, then EEK!

Ozeanbay – Wow, it does look like a really cool coloring book or comic book. Your details are amazing.

Every painting is a new adventure.October 24, 2023 at 8:16 am #1530125Ozeanbay, medieval art is my favourite. I
love your dragon so much. What a great idea!Makes you wonder what they ran into. I’m assuming it was a gigantic Nile crocodile. Or a saltwater one, they’re pretty aggressive.

The original is horrifying, almost makes me feel sorry for the monster!

Old hobbyest, that are some scary paintings. The scull and hand is so well done, great perspective. The last one is nightmare material
Beautiful pumpkin patch Michelle, there is such a great depth in your painting.
I love all the thinking and work behind your painting, Ozean, very unique and so well done.
October 24, 2023 at 3:32 pm #1530273It is interesting that some of you can see my images as well as others after monica’s. I can’t. I’ve even rebooted my computer to see if that’s the problem. Oh well, that’s technology for ya.
October 24, 2023 at 7:46 pm #1530297Michelle Nicely done and the bright pumpkins belie the lurking menace of the pumpkin monster.
Ozeanbay What a great take on a medieval style. Humans have certainly been fascinated by dragon-like creatures for a long time. It does make one wonder what they saw that made them conjure up these images.
