That is correct advice, Michelle, which is how I am doing mine, just using the primaries and doing lots of mixing.

November 8, 2023 at 6:33 pm #1531930The colour brown reminds me of the late ‘70s — the bright pop art colours of 1965-1975 giving way to “natural” colours which all seemed to be various shades of brown.
exactly Colin. I love the bright mix of colours, and then urrrggghh it dumped to brown.
I have scrounged the cupboards and dragged out all the brown left over from the dayz when clay throwing was in vogue. Then you got various iron oxides to make brown. eek. I still have some.
One of the most depressing carpets I ever had was a shade of brown (in the 80s Colin!)… a slightly plum shade,
Gosh, what a let down Maureen. eek. live n learn hey.
Having said that… I always have had polished floor boards.. and dark wood kitchen table and chairs. I like dark jarrah floor boards, so nice – that was for the short 3 months in Darwin ( then the house blew down) next was Canberra – house had cork tiles.. lovely and warm coz that place was sure cold.
Then onwards til I moved here, I had floating floors – so again brown… but since I have been here, I ripped out carpet ( I have an aversion to carpet) and put in floating greyish/brown floors.Just as a side note… was it brown and green should never be seen or was it brown and blue.. ( in clothing) I think the former.
Thanks for hosting the challenge Kay.
You didn’t specify a style, so I am guessing we can choose our own?Oh, and I have never mixed a brown… Guess I shall have to give it a try,
Cheers Merri.

November 8, 2023 at 7:26 pm #1531932And just as I thought I was getting along nicely with ac
My black + orange is ok I guess
My blue + orange is more grey than cool brown. My end result is a mix of orange, blue. black.
A great exercise.

November 9, 2023 at 7:35 am #1531965I’ve never heard that about brown and green Merri. I do remember people saying blue and green clashed. They also said that about red and pink. But both can be nice combinations so I don’t know why people say these things lol.
Opposite colours will make grey. When I was young I took an art class and after a couple of days of pencil work, the instructor gave us some acrylic paint, just the primaries, black, and white, and told us to go paint something. I ended up with a big pile of grey paint because I could not make brown. When he came to check on me he mixed some, but didn’t really explain it and I never understood how he did it. Now I understand it better. I could have mixed green and added some to red. Or mixed purple and added some to yellow. Or mixed orange and added a little blue? That’s a combo I haven’t worked with yet.
I picked out a reference, it’s pretty much all brown.
C&C always welcome. Michelle

I’m using a set of Liquitex acrylic gouache that has only white, black, red, blue, yellow plus green. The paints are amazing, mix well, and have great qualities

Yes, blue and green should never be seen!!! But I also like them… just depends on the tones and shades!?
Merri … we need carpets here, it’s cold more often than warm!?
Well Michelle, when you mixed those combinations, they’re all just different amounts of the three primaries!
A recipe I used to give the kids at school, using poster paints … Red, plus 1/2 blue, plus 1/3 yellow. equals a brown!
A primary and its opposite will make a grey, just don’t think of it as a black/white grey!….. it’s just the different quantities making either grey or brown!?
10th tomorrow … maybe I should get cracking!
Cheers, Maureen

That’s it. I knew it was something, but I got it wrong.
Merri … we need carpets here, it’s cold more often than warm!?
I understand, I really do. I have mats ( big ones) in every room.
Today, just out of the blue it is predicted 40 degrees Celsius.
never mind. I shall make good use of the heat. Thanks Kay, I have a plan for a brown painting in a style I like.
Might not be a painting day today… acrylic and 40 do not mix.
Cheers Merri

Forum projects: Plant Parade projects in the Florals/Botanicals forum , WDE in the All Media Art Events , Different Strokes in Acrylics forum .November 10, 2023 at 4:37 am #1532043I went into the bedroom to get changed to go out for a short walk …. 2 hours later, I’m still in same clothes, having a much needed sit down and coffee, having sorted half my wardrobe out and packed some things for the charity shop and chucked other stuff in the bin!??
Had to chuckle, coz I do that … lol.
Perfect day 40 degrees for a job I had to do. I purchased a kitchen cabinet off market place and it arrived Thurs night. It was filthy… and I mean, really bad. I reckon there was the genetic dna of flies poo from 40 years ago. So I used the 40 degree heat to wash and wash and rinse this cabinet. Then when it dried, which was quick with the help of the heat, I used all the Mr Sheen, Marveer and anything else to give it some oiling. It is looking better, but it needs more oiling. It will need some tlc as in fixing a bit, but hey, its coming along and will be ticketyboo when I am done.
No painting when it gets this hot. and no air cond because I wanted the cupboard as dry as possible.

November 10, 2023 at 4:44 am #1532045Lol Merri …. and for those confused by Merri quoting me when my post doesn’t show it!
Doing a mod/admin thing and checking various replies, I realised I’d made my post thinking we were in the Cafe, not our brown challenge!?? However, Merri and I are obviously posting close in time, opposite ends of the day!
Sorry Kay and everyone!
Cheers, Maureen

At least you found a good use for a hot day Merri.
Well Michelle, when you mixed those combinations, they’re all just different amounts of the three primaries!
I know, but different ways of looking at it? At first I thought about using secondaries like purple for this challenge, but I think I might push it and just pick 3 primaries. I would consider using 2 blues if I needed other colours but since my ref is pretty much monochromatic I only need one.

November 15, 2023 at 6:41 am #1532531I have found the mix of Sap Green with Vermillion Hue makes a wonderful chocolate brown. Perfect for my pic. Looking forward to seeing what others have painted with their browns. Thanks for a great challenge Kay!

"Painting is my meditation"November 15, 2023 at 8:10 am #1532553I started making an outline on a piece of paper. I thought about free-handing this one but I did a little pen sketch of my ref and decided I better grid this one or things will be lopsided lol.
