I’ve finished my still life with an added insect….my colors are NOT muted like Garzoni – I have this gorgeous luminescent lemon yellow which I had to purpose as there was a choice of 5 colors in ac available in the town nearest to where I live:eek:
Well done tuscanny, It sounds really interesting.. go you for adding an insect.
It would be hard to mimic the muted, just as I said, make it your own.
I was outside yesterday fetching the brush and a bee was climbing all over it, and just as I was patiently waiting for the bee to finish exploring the brush, a skinky lizard darted up nearby… they are in the garden by the 1000s and are tiny , smaller than geckos. but I knew that should I have gone in & gotten the camera, the show would have been over.
CindyPaintings – yes, Mary Pratt – she paints beautifully and I very much liked her work too. Looking forward to seeing your painting .

May 7, 2020 at 12:36 am #980338This just reminded me to go back and clean up the background…. hell, what else can I do at 12:20am?
Now I’m ready to start adding my components. I did take a few pictures to make some plans. I’m working on a small canvas so it’s all very manageable thus far.

I haven’t started yet, still trying to finish one of my egg projects from last month. But I have been thinking about it. I should get out my acrylic inks for this one, haven’t really used them much.

Every painting is a new adventure.May 12, 2020 at 6:39 pm #1277926Hi all, while we are challenging ourselves in many ways, not only in art, in unknown artists, in coping with restrictions, coping with horror world news stories, & we had this new site challenge to test our mettle.
This will prove that we do have mettle and we will sail through it and the challenges of personal problems that arise daily.
So I am wishing everyone well, with kindness and hope.
I have not completed my submission, but I am well into it.
How is everyone else progressing?Cheers
Merri

May 13, 2020 at 7:19 am #1278214I have finished mine and put into a frame to keep me from picking at it! I don’t think I achieved the watercolor look of Giovanna Garzoni but I tried. My colors are more vibrant. It was a good challenge. Look fwd to seeing everyone else’s ideas.
My thoughts – A painter paints a picture given or suggested to them whereas an artist creates a picture from their mind. I think I have determined that I am a painter and not an artist. I still enjoy creating these pictures immensely, so I feel it is working for me. Stress relief at it’s finest.
Hope everybody is staying safe out there.
Regards,
Cindy
C/C always welcome
"Painting is my meditation"May 13, 2020 at 8:49 am #1278300Sorry Cindy, but I do not agree with your definition of an artist. Perhaps that is a personal goal for you but if you took some paint and created something with it, I see you as an artist.
C&C always welcome. Michelle

Every painting is a new adventure.May 13, 2020 at 8:52 am #1278304Thank you for the encouragement Merri and Cindy!
I haven’t started yet – thought about it – trying to work things out with this site is taking (wasting?) a lot of my time though! It’s unfortunate that this change had to come during present circumstances and for me personally, very challenging times……. I so miss contact with my family and other humans! Phone conversations are OK but no substitute for face to face or just being in the same house! I may not leave the house so thank goodness for a large garden!
I’m sure I’ll get something done for this – might be last minute!
And Cindy – don’t put yourself down – all artists take inspiration from other sources, including all the experiences you have in your mind but not exclusively those! If you put love and thought and interpretation into your painting of an image in front of you, then you are an artist!:)
Cheers, Maureen

Cindy:
This is a common misconception, and I’m happy to say that it is just not so. You paint, therefore you are an artist. There has never been an artist who hasn’t absorbed ideas or visual images from somewhere. Even Picasso and Salvador Dali, whose work was inarguably original and stylized, could draw and paint realistically from models or other sources, which they both did when they were first starting out.
Are you familiar with Mort Drucker, the satirical illustrator who did the film satires for Mad Magazine (who just died) – He was very imaginative – but that didn’t just come out of his mind by magic – He studied Michelangelo extensively, when he was younger! That explains how he could render so very many muscles, even in the face, that the rest of us never even knew existed! He learned from the best!
I think as you keep painting, you will get clarified in time, as to what you like and how you’d like to present it. I can say that during this period, I’m working from home, but don’t have to “sit there” continually until quitting time each day, but can take a short walk now and then. I’ve been taking photos, and they do help to make decisions, both of subject, light and shadow, and how to focus on what I would like the viewer to see (and what isn’t worth them seeing – meaning cropping or taking some elements out).
Keep painting, and studying! You are already an artist! Your gallery looks good!

May 13, 2020 at 7:21 pm #1278704I just spent a fruitless 45 min trying to navigate this new format. I really just wanted to see what others have been doing. I didn’t realize that I would learn all over again how to navigate this website.
I may not return to Wet Canvas. Certainly not for this month’s challenge. Why am I wasting my time floundering around here when there was no heads up on the changes or any tutorial to guide us into the interstices?May 13, 2020 at 7:59 pm #1278715Sorry you are finding the site so frustrating, Jim.
My understanding is that the site was literally on the edge of a complete breakdown, so the techs decided on a quick shift over to the new platform.
Even the Admins had minimal notice and they have been working like troopers trying to keep things going here. While I understand, and even share your frustrations, many people have put a lot of time and energy into saving the site. It is still a work in progress.
Some things may be lost in the transition, but WetCanvas is still here and it may be possible to iron out the major problems and make it a comfortable place to be online.
All that said, I may not get anything done this month. Not due to the site, but I have again lost my studio as the builders have returned and I have had to dismantle my makeshift painting spot in the basement.

Cindy : Firstly thank you and I agree, I hope everybody is staying safe out there…
Looking forward to seeing your submission for the challenge.. I don’t expect anyone of us has done a perfect Giovanna Garzoni, never mind, we have done some interpretation, and that is a good thing. At least we get to look at a fab artist and make something like it ‘our own’.
Cindy, you have a website with some beautiful paintings..I reckon I’d say, you are an artist.
Old Hobbyist, things change all the time, I guess in this instance, the change appears sudden, but look at the benefits, we still have a site with friends, chat, and a heap of people working to provide it..
Please stay. I sorta enjoyed your words last november.. from memory, you said you would always respond to a Mayday call.. Well, this is such one. We are being asked to be patient.Colin, I hope you find a spot to paint soon, and if you cannot manage it this time, no worries..
CBrusher – I am with you… I take my camera walking too and make up compositions from my shots.
Maureen, I hope you find the inclination and the time, but don’t stress, there is no sheep station at the end..(aussie terminology) and I acknowledge that times are challenging and different .
Cheers everyone stay safe.
Merri
