WELCOME TO THE DIFFERENT STROKES CHALLENGE FOR MAY 2018

If you would like to host a Different Strokes, please see the Schedule thread HERE

    Few rules –

All entries must be for this challenge and in acrylics – any type of acrylic.

Join in the discussion about the project – it’s friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images!

A ‘reveal’ date for all is 21st of the month – that gives us 3 weeks to make the work, plus an extra week for latecomers.

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH.**
If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st.

**Please note, the single ‘reveal’ date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations – that’s the whole point of it being called ‘Different Strokes’!
By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge – just don’t post images!!!

The theme for this month is ………….

Johannes Vermeer (1632 -1675) has become known as one of the most celebrated artists of the Dutch Golden Age.

Some of is paintings, like the Girl With the Pearl Earring have become iconic (there was even a movie about it), and there has been much speculation as to whether Vermeer made use of optical devices such as the camera obscura to assist his drawing (there was even a movie about it).

    *****************
    So what is the challenge?

To produce something inspired by Johannes Vermeer.

I like to give you several options, so you may:

    1. Do a Master Copy of a Vermeer painting.
    2. Do a Copy of a Vermeer painting (pinch his subject) but, do it in your own style!
    3. Paint your own painting of a person or scene that interests you, but do it in a way that reflects the influence of Vermeer.

    Portrait?

    Girl with a Pearl Earring

    Interior?

Woman Writing a Letter with her Maid

    Landscape?

    View of Delft

    Streetscape?

    The Little Street

How would Vermeer have handled the subject?

Now have fun! Or as the Dutch might say: Sich amuseren!

ALSO….putting a buxom wench riding on one of these things is sorta stretching it so I won’t do this. :)

            (What? It’s a Vermeer….what?)

I have TWO (Count ’em….2  ) Vermeers that I can do, so instead of tossing a coin to see which one, I’ll just do BOTH! I won’t tell ya which two paintings I am going to “update” but I will post each painting with its original Vermeer inspiration..

                This’ll be fun

Oh dear Colin – you know that saying about ‘famous last words’ and your final comment in April’s thread? ………. well. look who showed up here and with what ideas!!!!!!!

For me – I just love this idea – don’t usually copy things but always wanted to copy a Vermeer, just to see if I could! ………. ‘course, it may well turn out just to be ‘my style’ instead!
Thank you for a blessedly ‘normal’ challenge!

                    Cheers, Maureen

Cool Challenge and good variations, I’d love to be able to do a master copy, but it might be outside my skill set.
So I’ll think on what to do.

Woody, that is what my husband thought of when we saw the name Vermeer, called it a ditch witch lol. He also thinks of balers. I said most people would think of the Girl with a Pearl Earring? Never heard of it.

                                Good challenge Colin.

                                C&C always welcome. Michelle

Okay, I admire Vermeer more than any other artist. One of my clandestine hobbies is snarking to Susie about various people’s attempts to capture “Girl With a Pearl Earring.” I’ll have to think about it long and hard.
PS: Woody: that guy on the far left of “The Procuress” is wearing the same tunic as the artist in “The Artist’s Studio.” :clear:

Bill was a long time valued member of our community who passed away after a lengthy illness. We will miss him. Rest in peace.
