Welcome to our monthly Different Strokes Challenge for May 2022.
Your painting must be done in Acrylics – using any version of the medium! Any size, any shape, on any surface!
Works must not be uploaded before reveal date, the 21st of the month.
Now, what is the challenge for this month? I have chosen the artist Maud Lewis, (1901-1970), who was a famous Folk Artist from Nova Scotia, Canada. I have attached her biography
https://www.aci-iac.ca/art-books/maud-lewis/biography/
along with a few of her paintings, which I absolutely love for the simplicity and the colors.
She was not a rich person and worked very hard to create her art everyday to supplement her fishmonger husband’s income. She was thrilled when she sold two paintings in a day for $5 each. A lot of times she used marine paint as she had to use what was readily available to her. Dispensing the small amounts of her paints into individual sardine cans and paint from there. She also suffered from severe arthritis throughout her body for most of her life but still managed to paint with her badly gnarled hands. She also always painted from memory as she had no t.v., photographs or computers to work with. This woman had an extremely hard life in her tiny house and thankfully her beautiful art lives on.
I am hoping that you will join me in attempting to recreate some “Maud Lewis” style work. Thanks for your interest. Have fun.
Regards,
Cindy

"Painting is my meditation"May 2, 2022 at 9:56 am #1468819Thanks Cindy …. I was ‘introduced’ to her work a few years ago and quite amazed at the difficulties she faced and overcame.
Would you like us to paint any particular subject or just general, like ‘Nature’ in the style of Maud?
Never having done folk art, this will be a complete change for me!
Cheers, Maureen

If you wish you can attempt to recreate one of Maud’s originals or you can choose to do your own scene in her style. It’s up to you. Have fun!

May 2, 2022 at 9:43 pm #1468889I’m so glad to be introduced to Maud Lewis! Thank you, Cindy. I’m not sure that I’ll be able to join this month due to life filling up, but I will if I can!
May 3, 2022 at 12:14 am #1468901I love these. They remind me of needlework or quilts, but done in paint. I too can’t promise, but I’ll try.
Its sad about how she felt about pricing. Her story is a cautionary tale in not undervaluing your work.
C&C Always welcome.
