Welcome to the Different Strokes Challenge for February 2023
All entries must be for this challenge and in acrylics – any type of acrylic.
Join in the discussion about the project – it’s friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images!
Help can be gained from asking but also from looking for resource materials elsewhere – the RIL e.g.A ‘reveal’ date for all is 21st of the month – that gives us 3 weeks to make the work, plus an extra week for latecomers.
Interpret the ideas any way you wish – be inventive, realistic, influenced by another style or ‘…ism’ – it’s up to you!
PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH. Much more exciting and fun to see what ‘masterpieces’ appear!
If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st.At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.
Please note, the single ‘reveal’ date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ……
that’s the whole point of it being called ‘Different Strokes’!By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge – just don’t post images!!!
The challenge this month is …………….FLOWERS
Flowers have featured in art since at least the days of the ancient Egyptians and Minoans, and were a common decorative motif in imperial Roman, classical Persian and Indian painting, and became important as subjects in themselves in classical Chinese and Japanese paintings. In European Art, the Dutch, in particular, excelled at painting Still Life with flowers. Some good ones here:
The Best Dutch Still Life Painting: 6 Famous Painters
Floral painting became a very common subject in British and American painting in the 19th century, and was a subject explored by the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and even Picasso (see below)
You can paint them au naturel in a LANDSCAPE scene or, building on last month’s theme, put them in a vase in a STILL LIFE. If you live somewhere where flowers are still blooming you can paint PLEIN AIR. You may copy a classical painting. Paint them in any style you like—from Egyptian to your very own unique personal.
Have fun chasing away the winter blahs with some begonias, birds of paradise or blossoms!

February 1, 2023 at 3:02 am #1500497Well Colin – that’s right up my street! Hope I get the chance to participate too.
Can’t promise a Dutch flower study mind you – an Impressionist type, maybe!!
Thanks for hosting this month.
Cheers, Maureen

It just so happens that I’m supposed to paint a picture of a bouquet of flowers my mom’s sister gave her, and I was supposed to do it months ago. I guess this would be a good time.

Every painting is a new adventure.February 1, 2023 at 9:29 am #1500546What a wonderful way to get rid of the February blues! I love those dutch paintings. I rarely paint flowers so this will be a big challenge for me.
I just did the search on my phones photo library for plants and it says I have 13,729!!! photos of plants in my phone! I think I’m good for references haha.

Find me on FacebookFebruary 1, 2023 at 9:49 am #1500555Maureen, I thought the theme of “flowers” might just resonate with many of the crowd here. Of course you don’t have to come up with a Dutch masterpiece. In your case a Yorkshire masterpiece will be expected!
Michelle, if you are already supposed to do a painting of flowers, then you can hit two buds with one stone, as it were.
Virginia—yeah my wife was thrilled to see the first snowdrops appear last week, so I figured if we are happy to see the return of life to the garden after just a couple of months of gloomy weather, the real winter people in the middle of the continent will be even more in need of a pick-me-up.
And if you don’t normally paint flowers (like me), then it will be a change of pace.
I was quite drawn to the Picasso when I found it. I quite like his early Impressionist style paintings.

February 1, 2023 at 12:19 pm #1500586I love the flower painting style of the late 1600’s, early 1700’s with the black background and the big lush boquets. I also love the 1800’s. I was thinking I might do a study of a famous one or something like that.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.

The question is not what you look at, but what you see.

February 1, 2023 at 7:25 pm #1500639Can I paint silk flowers at a craft store? Only those are blooming right now.

February 2, 2023 at 8:19 am #1500684Carl, just to make things clear, you’re supposed to paint a picture of flowers, not paint on the flowers. Though it might be interesting to buy silk flowers and paint tiny flowers on the petals.
I think part of the reason I like Victorian style is they put flowers everywhere.
Sheila, don’t forget the catmint.

"Painting is my meditation"February 2, 2023 at 8:04 pm #1500752Virgina—I know you often paint against a black ground so that kind of study might really be stunning.
Sheila — Or “dog daisies.”
Carl – well, a painting of silk flowers in acrylics would meet the challenge. I didn’t say “real” flowers.
Cindy – glad you’re no board.

February 2, 2023 at 10:05 pm #1500762This sounds lovely! I’m not the best with flowers, so this is a good challenge. (I think I say that about everything though!)
Our nectarine tree is getting ready to bloom as are many other things here. Allergies are crazy right now! However, I remember what “real” winters are like. I miss a lot about them, but not the gloom of this time of year.
February 3, 2023 at 3:56 pm #1500840Kay – I thought it might be up your street. Knowing there were many flower enthusiasts emboldened my choice of topic.
Ozeanbay —I know what you mean!! But that’s why it is a challenge, eh? Those of us who don’t normally paint flowers can give it a shot.
