Sorry to be late, I cut my thumb pretty bad so this is a bit rushed.

This is based on an exercise a teacher gave us back in the day. We painted a picture then cut it up and rearranged it. For this though I took a 2 photocopies of the reference and cut that up first then drew the arrangement that I liked.

This is on a piece of cardboard simply because the cardboard was there and I’m not likely to keep it! Didn’t realize there was a good size dent in it until afterwards. It’s not very good, that green is awful! but I had fun playing. I like the black and white version better! and the sepia looks more traditional.

Looking through these all is truly a treat.

Tuscany, that does look like a cartoon! Looks the backdrop for a cell (old style animation). The colors are great to boot!

Merri, I love that style. Those clouds are the icing on a gorgeous cake. So so cool!

Maureen, so many colors, that makes me think of you. Lovely and colorful and sunny.

ScattyCat! Holy wow! those are wonderful. I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite but that top left one makes me feel things. It’s stunning. The bottom one would make a lovely card.

Cindy, these are both fantastic. The flipped color one has a wonderful surreal quality and the colors are terrific. Bravo.

David, that’s perfect. It’s a vortex of color and history and what a cool concept!

Kay, so soft and lovely. I refuse to believe you could paint a poppy disaster. You are the Queen of Poppies! :)

Ozeanbay! I love Trig. Another very cool concept and beautifully painted to boot. Really enjoy this one!

Carl, the tonal one is wonderful. The other one makes me homesick for the Northern Lights! Absolutely stunning and magical to boot.

Ron, the shapes you used are so angular and yet the tree is so round. Love this so much. I would hang it.

Mona, I don’t much like the acrylic pours but that one has changed my mind! It’s gorgeous! The second and third are beautifully painted. I think the fourth works fine, it’s colors are wonderful.

Jim. well done, nice use of space and shape and color. I like how the hills feel like they have such weight. Very cool.

Virginia,   that looks like so much fun.
Certainly a dif aspect.    Very clever.
        I love all three.

Sorry to hear your cut was quite deep .  Hope it gets better.

        Cheers Merri

Old-hobbyest, that’s a great take on our iconic tree, different, I like it :-)

Virginia, super job, cool, gonna have a go at this technique, ’tis a bit like looking through a stain glass window, love it. :yahoo: Oh, and no no, all greens are wonderful, there are so many of them :-) Hope the thumbie gets well quick.

Well Virginia, I really like what you’ve done – all versions! Big thank you!

You’ve reminded me that we did a little about fractured art some years ago – either in DS or a Paint a Long – just looking at doing Still Life in a different way …….. it was that idea (not the fracture bit) that sparked this month’s challenge….. I’m going back at least 10 years here!

As Kat says, the greens are good – we do get greens like this!

Sorry, I had a swift little giggle about your cut and the style!!!! My little cut is taking time to heal – yours was bigger and I hope it’s on the mend! :good:

                Cheers, Maureen

Old Hobby – nice semi-abstract. Nice use of lines throughout.

Thank you everyone, I’m glad you liked my trees. I have been wanting to try acrylic pouring for a while, so this got me started. The silicone that I had in the paint kept spreading the tree after I thought we were done.

Old_hobbyest – nice painting, very different
Virginia – great exercise and result, I may have to try that some time

Virginia – love the cut and paste  it looks like a lot of fun. Nice work.

Old Hobbyist – lovely abstract. Great idea to include the roots.

Thanks everyone, the stitches are those dissolving ones at least so I don’t have to go back and get them removed.

I forgot to say, the lines I did with Acrylic pens. I haven’t found much use for them, now I know they make lovely straight lines.

This was a really great challenge, Maureen. Thanks for hosting!

Virginia this is very cool.  I agree with Scatty – it looks like stain glass.  I am partial to the sepia toned one. :good:

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments on my mathematical version of this challenge. I really wasn’t trying to be so “out of the box” with this one…I just painted what I saw and got stuck in my brain! Perhaps my engineering background is affecting me. It was fun. :)

Merri — What a fun version! And thanks for teaching me about naive style.

Christel — This turned out really cool. Great use of the computer to help transform the reference.

Maureen — “A Tree for All Seasons” (my guess of your title after seeing the play “A Man for All Seasons” on my shelf) is beautiful and very clever. (Getting older is hard. I’m glad you can be there for your sister through this tough time for her.)

Scattykat — Whoa! So many! I really like the one with the silhouette on blue and the very first one with the blue tree and gold arch. All of them are wonderful though!

Cindy — Love the two versions you did. What an eerie feeling with the flipping of the colors.

David — So much movement! I almost feel like I’m literally swirling when I look at it…it could make a great cover for a book on time traveling.

Kay — So soft and tender! Great choices of color. Definitely no hint of a poppy disaster anywhere!

Carl — Great paintings! The second though really draws me in. I’ve never seen the aurora borealis in person, but I envision something like this.

Ron — Very cool and very different from your normal style! I agree that it’s hard not painting realism.

Mona — Four beautiful and unique takes! I love how you have such different styles in each one. I think my favorites are the Klimt and the impressionist ones.

Old Hobbyest — I really like how you balanced all the geometrical elements here! I especially like the sky.

Virginia — This is amazing! And with an injured thumb, too. I hope it’s healing well. I’ve heard of the exercise of cutting up a painting, but never had the courage to try it. Cutting up the reference though…brilliant! I’m actually partial to the full color version. The green looks great on my screen.
