WELCOME TO THE **JULY ** DIFFERENT STROKES CHALLENGE
If you would like to host a Different Strokes, please see the Schedule thread. HERE
Please read the guidelines below carefully.
GUIDELINES:
On the first of each month a theme/subject, reference photo (or photos) will be posted in a thread entitled “Different Strokes”.All entries must be for this challenge and in acrylics – any type of acrylic.
Join in the discussion about the project – it’s friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images!
Help can be gained from asking but also from looking for resource materials elsewhere – the RIL e.g.
A ‘reveal’ date for all is 21st of the month – that gives us 3 weeks to make the work, plus an extra week for latecomers.PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH.**
Interpret the ideas any way you wish – be inventive, realistic, influenced by another style or ‘…ism’ – it’s up to you! Much more exciting and fun to see what ‘masterpieces’ appear!
If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st.
At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.**Please note, the single ‘reveal’ date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ……that’s the whole point of it being called ‘Different Strokes’!
By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge – just don’t post images!!!******************************************************************
When we first started these challenges we chose a single reference and asked for individual interpretations, being as creative as could be!This month, I’m going back to basics……….. with a little twist (of course!)
Below is the reference image, but provided in greyscale – your challenge is to add the colour!
You can be naturalistic or impressionistic, or pointillistic, or expressionistic, or … abstractionistic! (new word!)
Be inventive … or not!;)
This is by mprince and is from the RIL, so if you really wish to, and need colour help, you can look for the original!
Off you go – have fun!
Cheers, Maureen

Hopefully my studio will be back in business in about 10 days’ time and I will be able to do something.
Orange grapes, purple lemons and pink pears should be interesting.

Fun… color and style interpretations!
My challenge from last month, well I had so much fun painting it over with a technique I was experimenting with….. now I want to hang that piece and it’ll need a few accompanying pieces.
Be prepared!

That jug looks familiar. Anyone remember the Thai eggplants? Not making any promises though, been thinking about some unfinished projects and things I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

I prepared a BIG support last evening. It’s the same one I had used for “just experimentation” when I was super stuck. These last few weeks I’ve been feeling SO much better I want to paint, to run, to clean, to…. ! It’s suddenly as if there are no complications at all! But, as many may be aware, we’re in a second blast of Covid-19 and all but locked down again. What better to do than make a mess and paint! Not to mention it’s so seldom I actually FEEL well enough to do this. I only wish I had been feeling this well starting last month for my own challenge! I may have decided to do an outdoor mural!

I’m in the middle of reading Color Theory by Patti Mollica. I like to go through it every now and then so count me in!

Some day I’m going to look back on this work and tell myself, “That was my last challenge before I turned Pro!”
I love doing these shapes… they are SO easy! Nice, smooth easy brush strokes with no pained corners! But still, I made an oopies. Mostly it was because I wasn’t looking at the reference as I worked. The reference was on my computer but I was painting at the counter where I have more space for the bigger support. Perhaps I’ll do 2 of the same work….. I can see immediate progress- or not!

Oh I ALWAYS make mistakes but this is SO obvious but, in a way, I like it! I realize I have plenty of time to recognize the error and go back and redo- but I don’t want to! I’m thoroughly enjoying this!

Every painting is a new adventure.July 8, 2020 at 8:31 pm #1309698I make mistakes all the time, and very clumsy too. lol That’s why I like forgiving mediums.
I always feel like inks are a forgiving medium. I remember saying that to a soft pastels artist on here and he laughed telling me inks are one of the worst. I had never thought of them that way- I would just start all over. Because the supplies generally cost less I considered starting all over easier and cheaper than buying more paint and re-gesso-ing or finding another support. But finally life is catching up and I’m discovering the joy of acrylic when I can just buy more…… I was never much of a person to dine out expensively but I have more cash for art supplies somehow. (Also not a drinker… I just don’t like the taste nor the effects.)
But, and though I probably don’t always explain, when I’m “not feeling good” one thing is I can be in horrible pain. I know people can imagine “pain” but my pain will make standing horrendous so much so that I will start shaking if I cannot find a place to sit immediately. And sitting usually means I have to use a smaller support. I just do not have space to set up an easel and a stool.
However, I’ve been standing at the counter painting and having a hell of a time using copious amounts of materials- and it’s much more fun. There is a lot of stress knowing that I have to get up to get more paint. Then I try to be precise and painting stops being very fun. But it’s difficult to explain pain levels when walking 5 feet is miserable. -It’s not always the pain but also the anticipation of experiencing pain. So, painting while knowing that I’m going to be in horrible pain in a few minutes… yeah, blows inspiration out of the water.
But I’ve been enjoying this. Enjoying mistakes and moving big amounts of paint and mediums and plopping things down (away from cats) but not as worried because I’m in less pain, less likely to fall onto my work- and overall, in a better mood so messing up isn’t a big deal.
So the challenge that isn’t! I’m being artistically challenged but finally, not physically challenged at the same time. Hell, I did laundry yesterday and that was FUN! Everything is fun when I’m feeling better! Not really sure why I’m feeling good. Happens in summers sometimes. I’m just grabbing it and holding on tight as I push plastic pigment around on my picture!
