Fine so far, still no strong winds.

Good evening all.Mega hugs for all who need them.
I got a dress I am happy with, Alan put up hangers in the vegetable garden while I was out, so now my orchids are hanging in there. So many are in bud, I am excited. I hope they bloom soon.
Supper time. I am back to a very limited eating plan, to make sure I don’t eat anything starchy or gaseous.

My Youtube videosJanuary 9, 2020 at 2:48 am #930682Good evening Doug and all following.
Slept in and took half a day to get rid of the after effects of truly vivid dreams. Quite disconcerting. Not nightmares.
Birds and hoppies fed, birds now circulating the house screeching their little avian lungs out. Did consider going out and screaming at them ” half rations” but roger would have been embarrassed … as well as being recently eviscerated. He did offer to hold Eli while I changed her collar.
Loki waits for the morning. She took off at the first sight of the packaging. So… Cats can’t read?

My Flickr SiteJanuary 9, 2020 at 3:55 am #930687Morning Doug, JJ and Annie. Weather was supposed to be horrible overnight but joy of joys I slept right through it. It’s definitely breezy out there now.
JJ, good news on your blood tests. You’ve really been through it recently.
Uschi, glad to hear your iron tablets are working. I’ve been told to take vitamin D so I’m taking a tablet every day. I already take some in a multi vitamin but my levels are “insufficient”. Maybe I need to go somewhere sunny. Friends and I were talking about how dark it is in the UK.
Annie, how near are your neighbours? If they’re far away, go screech. I’ve been known to bark right back at yappy dogs, especially if they’re behind a fence!
Sylvia, glad to hear your cough has cleared up. Thanks to those who suggested Buckley’s cough syrup. I’ve never heard of it but Benylin does the trick for me. It seems most doctors aren’t keen on cough syrups but if it makes me feel better I’m happy. I’ve also been drinking a mixture suggested by my singing teacher. Two tablespoons each of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and honey in a mug of hot water with cinnamon sprinkled on top. I still have a cough but I don’t feel so dreadful.
Thing thing to watch out for for those of us recovering is not to do too much. I made it to art class yesterday, and really enjoyed it but I was worn out when I got home, it’s great to be getting back into the swing of things but I’m pacing myself.
Marshall, you don’t need much in the way of boating skills to have a canal boat holiday. In the past we’ve had both a sports cruiser and a small yacht and these do need skills but we’ve borrowed a friends canal boat and found it easy peasy, and this was before we did any sailing. You can’t get lost, and once you’ve mastered steering the thing and tying up you’ve only the locks to worry about. The pace of life on the canals is very leisurely. Alternatively you can go on a hotel boat. These are larger versions and come with crew and usually other guests as well. Not long after we married we hired a river cruiser on the Thames. We travelled from Abingdon to Windsor and back over the course of a week. We could have driven it one way in about an hour and a half!
Bill, oh dear, you must have felt that sinking feeling when you opened the dryer door.
Char, how frustrating it must have been not to see your regular doctor. Your class must seem like a little oasis.
Darla, I smiled at the kid saying “you killed it”. A student of mine once said “You’re mint, miss” and I had to ask my boys when I got home whether that meant good or bad. Mint was then replaced with “sick” and both mean good! It’s a whole different language!
Greetings to all I’ve missed and those who wash up later.

January 9, 2020 at 4:53 am #930669Good Morning all,
It is almost 5:00 a.m. here in still sleeping Oakwood. Very quiet with not a sound outside. My visit with the doctor yesterday was a good one. My A1C rating dropped a bit from that unexpected high, needs to come down a little bit more, but she wasn’t unhappy with it. Lost a few pounds too. So I’m happy.
QS, you are so right, “everything in moderation” makes sense when you are recovering from something medical. Keep getting better day by day.
Good luck, Doug, getting the old mattress to the recycling center.
JJ, I’m nursing the orchid plant my daughter gave me last year hoping to see it bloom again. It’s still alive, so we shall see. I like your fence around the veggie garden…does it have something across the top? Around here it would or the squirrels would have fun climbing up and over it around here.
to Annie and all who are on their way.

Sylvia
January 9, 2020 at 6:25 am #930678Good day all,
Cold!
Not much sleep as struggled with my shoulder pain. I’ve finally taken a pill, which I hate to do. I’ll try to sleep again.
Doug, we once cut a mattress up in order to get it out of the house. I put it in trash bags and the garbage haulers took it away.
JJ, I struggle to see the color but I’m sure the flowers are in there somewhere.
Annie, I once tried to give Ms. Feral some vitamins in gel form but she wouldn’t eat it. I then put some on her paw thinking she would lick it off. NOT!! She shook it off. The next time I showed her the tube it came in, she just shook her paw. She’s plenty healthy anyway.
QS, very wise to not over do it. I don’t over do it even when I’m well.
Sylvia, glad your doctor visit was a good one.
Char, it must be so frustrating trying to feed Ted food that is just right for his system.
I have chicken bone broth brewing in the instant pot. I’ll have some egg drop soup when I get up again.
To bed once more,

January 9, 2020 at 6:28 am #930677everyone,
It’s -30 right now and today’s high will be -12. I knew it was cold overnight by all the loud popping sounds coming from the house as it contracted. In January we usually get 2 weeks where the temperatures are below -20 day and night but it’s not here yet. Tomorrow should be close to 0.This evening I have my art club’s business meeting. Besides that nothing is scheduled but who knows what will pop up. I started reading Margaret Atwood’s “Testaments” yesterday (her sequel to the Handmaid’s Tale). I’m liking how it is filling in the story line from the first. I didn’t expect a happy read and one thing about her books is that they stay with you a very long time.
Good morning to all before me and all who follow. I hope you all can have a happy, pain-free day. Breakfast and some more reading before I start my day.

January 9, 2020 at 6:29 am #930690Good morning all. Waves to those who come later.
Cool day today then turning a lot warmer over the next week. My M Graham paints arrived yesterday but I’ll probably wait until tomorrow to put them into a palette as Chris is off today. I’m trying my best to talk her into retiring with me. I really want to start traveling before something happens to our health. We can afford for her to retire but she is worried that she will get bored not going to work. I’m worried about the toll her patients have on her.
I rewatched the whole first season of Great Canal Journeys yesterday with Chris hoping she would get hooked on them. Thanks for the info QS.
Going to take it easy again today.

Living the retired life in NE FloridaJanuary 9, 2020 at 7:43 am #930671Good Morning! It’s still black as a witch’s heart outside my window. When I tripped off to bed last night, it was-10 and has warmed up to -4C. Weather is on the way.
My handyman was a no show. He’s fired from a job he’s never done.
I think our House Cleaner will be here this morning. Her schedule was cut up because of the Holidays and I’m not really sure if today is her day. I’ll tidy up anyway. There’s not much to organize.
I didn’t get to town yesterday afternoon, so I’ll get that done today. And that will be the sum total of my commitments for the day. I plan to do “not much” today.
Mattresses are really a challenge to remove, Doug, as you already know. The last time we dealt with the problem, the two very young Delivery Men stood by and watched Ted and I pull the new mattress up over the second story balcony. Because they weren’t authorized for that labour.
I have two orchids that do flower indoors, which I cherish. I cannot imagine having a whole garden filled with them, JJ. It’ll be some exciting when they bloom.
Oh, they can read, Annie. Write in code.
QS, pacing ourselves even in good health is important. I’m glad you’re beginning to feel better.
Sylvia, are you taking insulin? for the good A1C and the loss of some weight!!
Bill, I hope your shoulder pain eases up. Your soup sounds really good.
Ellen, I finished Testaments a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t like the book at all and you may be surprised by the ending.
Marshall, I think that retirement requires a plan. It’s definitely a life style change. It would be nice for you and Chris to be able to travel together.
The coffee is really good this morning. It’s interesting that I make our coffee the very same way every day. But some days, now and again, are much better than others. I’m going to finish this cup, get a second, and then turn off the warming burner. Ted’s coffee can be heated in the microwave. He’s still in bed and likely won’t be up for a couple of hours.
Have a great day, Everyone. Hug a loved one. Be creative and happy. And healthy.

January 9, 2020 at 8:18 am #930688I must have been really lucky because I had a new single mattress delivered before Christmas and the charming young chap took it upstairs and put it on the bed. He liked the house and the decorations and asked if he could come for Christmas but I said there were too many of us already 😆😆.
We kept the old mattress for GD to land on when she falls out of bed.
My OH kept on at me to retire so that we could travel, so I did, but now he has so many voluntary commitments that I have real trouble fitting in a trip. I’m less than 100% happy!
In all these things we are more than conquerors.
January 9, 2020 at 8:41 am #930689Doug, just had a thought. If your old mattress is in a usable condition the British Heart Foundation might take it away for free. They do a free furniture collection for items they can sell in their shops. Alternatively the council might collect it for a fee. Or, you might find “a man with a van” will take it away for less.
Wirral used to collect large items free, then it went to £15. I’ve just looked it up and it’s now £28.50 for up to 6 items.
In all these things we are more than conquerors.
January 9, 2020 at 8:55 am #930670Good Morning!!
Cold night but it is warming up to unseasonable temperature again. Sun:thumbsup:
It’s Thursday = Cake and Scrabble day. I am hosting but since it is one of our players’ 82nd birthday Super Baker decided she would bake and bring a more elaborate cake than the kind I would make:) I have to go to the Dollar store to get some candles .
Char more :grouphug: for you and Ted and more for improvement.
Darla, you must be so pleased with your new countertop, you have waited a long time for that. Sorry about your aches and pains and having to put up with the part of your job you don’t like but  for doing so well with it anyway.
Steve, (((())) for Lisa, difficult time re her mum but so glad that the doctor eased her conscience.
Marshall, travel can only fill a small amount of time, one needs a good hobby and friends to fill in the rest of the time or it will get boring.
JJ, I am soooooo glad you are feeling so much better and the doctor renewed your confidence about your health. I like your garden spot with the hanging orchids. 7 days????
Ellen, I am still wondering where on earth Margret Atwood’s mind was when she wrote the Handmaid’s Tale:rolleyes:  Maybe this follow-up book is trying to explain it.
Doug, the City here will haul big stuff like mattresses away for $ 30.00 per item, do they not have this kind of offering there?? I had them take my ancient love seat away, easy peasy and well worth the money.
Bill, after a year of suffering with my shoulder with all sorts of tears in it, endless physio therapy sessions etc. I came to realize that the problem was in the muscles etc. of my arm which pulled the shoulder out of place. After doing exercises (strengthening and stretching) for my arms the shoulder sorted itself out perfectly.
Sylvia, you are on the right path!!
QS, the iron supplements are working but very slowly, supposed to be 11 – 34 mine is now at 15, that is after taking the supplements for 8 months, mine was at 9 to start out with. I am making a follow-up appointment with the doctor today.
My DIL’s mom is also low in Vitamin D and needs supplements, I have been takingVitamin D supplements all along because I don’t sit in the sun and we have long winters.
Annie, “eviscerated” was a new word to me, I had to look it up, what on earth have you done to the poor man???:)
to all here and all yet to come!!

January 9, 2020 at 9:18 am #930684A good Thursday to all…….cloudy today, but we’ll get to 64°…..in January no less. Next week they’re calling for a cold front that will drop us into our normal temps for this time of year….mid to low 20’s at night low 40’s in the day. I knew it was too good to last.
Nothing big planned today. Lisa is taking off the day to meet with her brother and visit some local dedicated Hospice Centers for her mom when she comes out of Rehab….and we’ll have to pack up her things at the Assisted Living Center……..again. So much stuff in a basic studio unit and the majority of it is just “stuff”. Stuff, she couldn’t tell you when or where or what importance it holds now and the nutcrackers (300+ that are on every available horizontal surface)………As for me, my plan is simply to putter about the studio today.
This was our sunrise…..
JJ……..will be interesting to see your orchids in bloom. My ex-SIL who just recently passed over, had a huge collection of orchids inside and out down in Florida….some even in the rare category. Just before her passing, the President of the Orchid Society contacted her about getting a seed pod from one of the more rare ones that she saw a picture of on FB…..they have cataloged it as a memorial line to her in the society.
Bill…..I have done that more times than I care to admit too….Goof Off will take any residue left in the dryer off…..
On a side note……reading and listening to the “Harry and Mega” saga, I have to admit I don’t understand this “Royal Family” love affair. Not Harry and Megan, but the whole thing, which is basically the latest generation of wealth and property grabbing robber barons who claimed that God has chosen them and their decedents to be “Rulers” of all for life……..how friggin convenient is that…..and now Harry and Megan decide they don’t want to active members of the “Royal” play (talk about Shakespearean tragedies), but they want to keep the house his grandmother (the Queen) provided and the 95% of their income coming from Daddy………….someone tell me again, just what is it the “Royal” family does other than the epitome of walking, talking, hand waving historical wax museum figures…..”God Save the Queen”, seems to me the citizens of the UK bear that burden more than God. Yes, I know I’m just an ignorant yank, but really, haven’t the age of Kings and Queens about out lived their usefulness……..just sayin. Let my crucifixion begin.
Greetings to all here and those to come.
Be good, do good……spread your spirit in color.
Steve.Pain and heartaches aren't options in life........misery is a choice.
January 9, 2020 at 10:36 am #930666Steve, if Geoff was here he would give you the reason we keep our constitutional monarchy. The alternative is someone like Trump.
The matress is gone! The next door neighbour helped me tie it on the car roof and a five minute drive to the recycling centre was all it needed. They even helped me unload it and put it in the skip.
Phoned a local solicitor and set in motion transferring the house deeds into joint manes. When we bought the house 52 years ago Ruth was under 21 and couldn’t be on the deeds
It has been a dry mild day so far, around 6C/43F.
We had an invite from the owner of our favourite nursing home to a party on the 31st to celebrate our leaving of the EU

We must leave our mark on this worldJanuary 9, 2020 at 10:54 am #930679Uschi, my shoulder pain originates from a doctor’s injection that created a spinal cord injury and permanent nerve damage. He nearly killed me.
The rest of the pain came from a surgeon who was supposed to just remove a chipped bone but, while I was asleep, decided to take out the so-called arthritis from around my shoulder. I nearly killed him. Therapy was ineffective and exercise exacerbates the pain. So, I have to deal with it the best I can.As far as Megan and Harry, being royal is also a sort of imprisonment. How do you get out of such a long, historic tradition without huge controversy? I don’t think you can. It’s been tried before and failed.
Doug, at least you didn’t have to go to war to win your independence. I hope it all works out well.
Trump does want to be king. He’s said so.Steve, beautiful photo!
