BRRR…it’s 16F here but feels like -2F with the wind chill. We have wind gusts of 22mph. It howled all night and we were afraid we’d lose power but thank goodness we didn’t. I just that we don’t lose power while we are at work. That could be disasterous.
Like Char, I’m so sick of this weather. We’ve had days of rain and all that snow we had melted and the ground is still frozen so there is no where for the water to go. This morning we blowing snow and wind. Next week they are calling for at least a couple of days of freezing rain again. :o
I’m so glad it’s finally Friday. It’s Larry’s weekend off so he’s looking forward to it too. We have lots to do, mostly painting, cleaning and a run to the good will to take some things.
Justin starts his new job on Monday; he’s a bit nervous and excited. He will do fine; I have no doubt.
I talked to my Mom last evening and she’s doing fine. She said she’s been house-bound for days and she’s starting to go stir-crazy. She won’t go out and about when there is so much ice and snow. I told her not to either. My sister will keep her in line.
Char, I hope Ted is healing nicely under his vac and that he was able to shower this morning. I feel bad about him having to eat hospital food. Poor guy.
Thinking of Sylvia having her biopsy this morning and that all will be okay.
Ellen, WOW…that is a LOT of snow!
They charge for parking at one of our hospitals here too. They are building another hospital here soon. It will be beautiful, hopefully full of well educated, brilliant doctors and nurses.
I’d like to wish you all a great day and weekend coming up. Do something nice for someone and yourself too. :grouphug:

February 8, 2019 at 9:57 am #778367Hi Everyone:wave:
John wishing Barbara a very happy birthday!
It is snowing with wind gusts to 90 kms today. I hope we do not loose power:crossfingers:
A few pics of my son’s cat Smokey, that I adopted 4 years ago, when Cody moved into a condo with no cat’s allowed. Smokey is now 11 yrs old, and he weigh’s 20 lbs. and lives with us. Pic taken when he was 6 weeks old.
:grouphug: to Char and Ted and everyone that needs one.
Have a great one!

February 8, 2019 at 10:22 am #778385Good morning. Sun is shining, but it we had a hard freeze of 25’F last night. I am not moving from the house today. They are talking sleet tonight, but I will not believe it until it is falling from the sky! My first daffodils were open yesterday, I have not look this morning.
Sylvia, I hope that your procedure is over, and that you are on your way home!
Darla, This has been a hard winter for you with all the ice/snow. I hope we all get an early spring. I don’t do cold weather well. None of our hospitals in Plano or the surrounding area require parking fees. In the City of Dallas they do.
Sharon, Your kitten is too cute, you should have posted a current photo of him.
Ellen, UGH! That photo of Brian brings back memories of the 1966 blizzard we had in Chicago. Our snow was piled up to the top of Brian’s hat that year. It was shortly thereafter that my parents moved to Florida, and we followed three years later.
Char, :grouphug: Hope that Ted’s wound is getting better. If the roads are bad, please stay home today. Ted will understand!
Steve, The conference in NOLA sounds like a good opportunity for you and the doctors to explore better ways to treat your condition. The train will be a fun way to travel, and NOLA is a fun place to visit.
Doug, Hope that they are able to fix your eye problem quickly.
Geoff, Glad that you are receiving the treatments you need for your eyes. Taxi’s are so expensive.
Anita, We went from 80 degrees down to 25 last night in less than four days.
John, So glad that you had a romantic birthday dinner for Barbara last night. Is the family dinner a surprise party? If so, she will be very surprised since you celebrated last night.
Hi to anyone I missed, I am off to eat breakfast so that I can take my meds.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."- EinsteinFebruary 8, 2019 at 10:27 am #778360Hiya! I talked to the old man on the phone. He ordered pancakes for his breakfast. The only problem with them was that he couldn’t even cut them with a knife! I told him to call the kitchen and get someone up to look at them. He wouldn’t. Dr. Liebman has ordered shower rails, a bathtub bench and a toilet extension for us. I’m not sure how this works and how to get all this stuff home and/or installed. I ordered his tv subscription for another 3 days.
Bill, hospitals are not government owned. They are subsidized. The cost of parking has long been a bone of contention but short of legislation, nothing will be done. I’m lucky in that I am able to park in a subsidized lot and my daily cost is only $7. When my Mother was in hospital, I was paying as much as $20 per day. I usually parked along the street and fed the metres because it was cheaper.
Now THAT’s snow, Ellen. You may keep it, thank you.
Darla, it’s so nice that Larry has the weekend off work. But, try to just do something for yourselves. All these chores will still be there because they’re neverending!!!
Sharron, Smokey was an adorable kitten! Cody’s not bad, either.
Nancy, stay indoors and enjoy a staycation with your miniatures and books and crafts.
One of the dykes as broken near Jeannettes Creek and the flooding has become that much worse. I feel so bad for the poor people in the path of the flood waters.
The snow has basically stopped. It’s still windy, but I’m going to strike out anyway.

In England, not Wales, you pay for parking in hospitals.
Weather, heavy rain stopped about 1pm abd lovely sunlight but wind ever increasing.
Fingers crossed for Sylvia/Char/Ted and anyone else that is suffering.

February 8, 2019 at 12:02 pm #778378A few flakes of snow drifting past the window, cold, much of the ice has evaporated but still icy underfoot, staying put today. Nothing like Ellen’s photo though
I wanted to post a photo of the ice, but laptop is arguing with me again……frozen on my files with a black bar at the top of the screen, although the internet and mail are accessible??? Am doing a security scan and if that doesn’t find anything, it’s back to the shop again.
Just got the last Shetland book, Wild Fire, digital, from the library, long wait! So thats what I’m doing for some of the day
Glad Ted is a bit better, hope your trip is safe Char :grouphug:
Sweet kitty, Sharon!
Lucky you, Geoff! The local archaeology group here meets two busses away and it is too much for me at night. Couldn’t find a ride unfortunately. I keep up with the journal though. I’m sorry that Digging for Britain on TVO is finished here.
Interesting that you are an historian, John. After my science degrees I took most of an archaeology degree while I was working at the university. Fascinating! I did a field course at Cadbury Castle in Somerset as my retirement adventure and then camped for two weeks around Devon and Cornwall. Great memories
I hope everyone is having a good day!

February 8, 2019 at 12:39 pm #778391Good morning all!
Waiting for Snowmageddon 2019 here. You can’t buy a bag of Melt (de-icer) for your life in the entire county right now. I have half a bag left so that’s not going to clear the driveway later on – reserving it for the walkway. Looking like a LOT of snow headed our way on top of what’s not melted – certainly nowhere near what Ellen has, but then….I don’t have a wonderful Brian + snowblower either
Last night I SLOWLY drove to the first session of this watercolor class I’d signed up for months ago. It’s 6 weeks, 2.5 hours on Thursday nights. I’ve done a lot of self-learning, but figured the face-to-face lessons would help me fill in some gaps. After last night, I’m just hoping that maybe I have a painting buddy or two out of it – 10 students, ALL women, 9 of us are 50s-70s. The instructor seems like a nice guy, but oil painting is CLEARLY his real passion and as the evening progressed (and he continued to ramble rather incoherently), I was exchanging a few eyerolls with more than one of the other gals. I’m not the only one that came into the class having done painting on my own so most of us managed to sit at the same big table. But…here’s the kicker. After class was OFFICIALLY over, I was packing up my stuff and chatting with a couple gals and somewhere in there I mentioned “fugitive colors.” So the gal asked me to explain. And THEN…THE INSTRUCTOR came up behind us and said what are you talking about? Fugutive pigments. What are those? [visualize Tracy faceplant]
I guess I’m glad I had my suspicions confirmed at the beginning. I’ve debated calling and asking the school for my money back, but I think I may manage to learn a little in bits and pieces (half of that from other students) and hopefully find someone to meet with occasionally to paint and chat with. I don’t know if it’s more about how bad he is as a watercolor instructor or a testament to how much I’ve learned, but…SHEESH. Oh, and zero lesson plan or goal for the evening. I’m too much of a former educator to not fidget in my chair when someone I’ve paid for instruction is rambling on (and I WAS a bit of a smart ass last night and will probably continue in that vein – he NEEDS to sharpen up his act). BTW, this is not the guy that was originally scheduled to teach. If anything, what I learned is that if I spend the next couple years continuing to practice my painting, I have a retirement career in teaching watercolor through the local community college
On to better things…
Doug, that’s odd with your eye – do you have high blood pressure??
John – a history teacher! I imagine you sharing your enthusiasm for history and inspiring others. I hated history through my high school years and while I toyed with majoring in it in college, I was too afraid of all the memorization that everyone said was a big part of getting through the program (I am not good at memorizing for the sake of memorizing). But I love reading history, and essentially majored in PRE-history as an anthropology major (specializing in SW archaeology) for my undergrad work.
Anita, I go through periods with most of my hobbies where I just kind of brown out for awhile. Maybe you just need to READ about watercolor for awhile and your mojo will come back after you give yourself permission to take (and enjoy) a break away from your brushes. This is the reason it’s good to have MANY hobbies lol!
Boy, it truly is EYE DAY – Geoff, I hope you are back home by now and resting comfortably! (My mom had cataract surgery early this morning so I think it’s all about the eyes right now )
Annie, have things dried out there now? I agree with Steve – you ARE being generous about the ex.
I’m glad you passed on that drive Bill! 55 miles on icy roads x 2 would be a long, stressful drive!
Steve, sounds like the timing of the conference gets you down there after everything is swept up following Mardi Gras? That’s a potentially fun place for a conference – I hope you get some time to explore and maybe have some sketching time? Or at least to take some photos home to inspire you later?
JJ, are you feeling any better? I so miss seeing sketches from you!!
Char, I will be eagerly watching for your evening update. I’m hoping for a safe trip for you, but also that FINALLY Ted’s wound will show signs of healing so you can get him home early next week!
Ellen, that is a mind-numbing amount of snow! You can bet that someplace like Seattle would be at a complete standstill with that (and we may indeed all be stuck in our tracks for a few days after today). My hat is off to people who can still get back and forth to work, run errands, and carry on with all that snow and the extra work it involves!
Uschi, I bet Connie likes the chocolate, but LOVES the visiting with you more! What kind of kitty litter really works on ice? I have this semi-exotic clumping variety made out of recycled GRASS, but because it clumps (like clay litters) I figure it would just put an extra layer of slickness on top of the ice….???
Darla, I hear you on the TGIF front!!! Usually I feel like the weeks start to go more quickly in February (we are getting more light then too). Maybe it’s all the inclement weather?? I’m with your Mom on the housebound/stir-crazy front. I’m jittery already thinking about maybe not being able to get out for a week (or more).
Oh Kay, Smokey was an adorable kitten!! How ’bout a grown-up shot? (lol – I see Nancy is asking the same thing!)
Nancy, welcome to the party. The COLD party. You guys had it too good most of the week Wow, daffodils already!
WTH? How can pancakes be SO TOUGH that you can’t cut them with a knife? Are they giving them those cheapest plastic utensils or are the pancakes that much of a mess?! Char, it truly sounds like you need to sneak him in some more of your good home cooking to keep him nourished while there!
Geoff, I LOVE that song. But so Steve can find his way home, we need to throw in a little Marc Cohn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTVbf44HMkY
Lynn – holy cow, another arch/history buff!
Bill….I know. I was so sad to see Albert Finney’s death in the news this morning. Such a versatile actor and enjoyable actor to watch! I just adored him in Erin Brockovich and have to admit I’ve never seen Tom Jones (which I will rectify this weekend).

February 8, 2019 at 1:19 pm #778380Good morning everyone – the snow held off until this morning, but has been coming down steadily since about 6 am. DGD has a snow day from school (yes, we are wimps here), but she was going to stay home anyway as she was up late last night – Uschi, Coppelia by Ballet Jorgen – both DD and DGD really enjoyed the performance. They sat next to DGD’s ballet teacher, and she had spent the day with the Company helping out – great opportunity for her. And DD was able to get a friend to use my ticket. I just couldn’t have sat for that length of time with all of the air still in me.
Thanks for the hugs, Char, much appreciated. For the last week Stubbi cat has stuck to me like a bur, and now knows I’m no longer worried, so is back to his normal self. I got the letter I needed the procedure in September, and have been worried since then. My ex had a botched laproscopy, had to then have a huge operation to correct it, and had the same set-up as Ted, which worked really well. Continued best wishes and hugs to you both for his healing.
Tracy, you are getting more of the snow than us, but high winds are also forecast for this afternoon, so possible power outages. Our water is filled up, and we can still access the pond, although it is partially frozen over.
Love your cartoon Geoff – so true!
Bye for now, Betty
February 8, 2019 at 1:35 pm #778379Very funny, Geoff! Yes, a place of legends. We were working at an adjacent hill with bronze age findings, since I couldn’t dig, I got to do some of the plot plans, and taught the younger students to use the soil washer….hours with hands in cold water, but so exciting when you found something interesting!
Tracy, meant to say earlier, love those thrummed mittens. I bought the wool for the thrums, but for the life of me, can’t remember knitting the mitts Will have to have a search and purge I think. Good luck with the snow !
Glad that’s over for you, Betty that you get an all clear.
Cheers, Lynn

"Ring the bells that still can ring, Forget your perfect offering, There is a crack in everything, That's how the light gets in" Leonard CohenFebruary 8, 2019 at 1:54 pm #778358BACK AGAIN:cat:
It’s currently 1:30PM. I was out of the house by 10am & dropped off a watercolor of a sunflower & the little diddy I did before Christmas one night when I could not sleep. Looks like a good art show. The awards are tonight but I wont be going out. I just feel worse if I am out in this cold & damp weather.
I stopped in at grocery & got ingredients to make sloppy joes for supper & mac & cheese. Comfort food. While I was at the grocery I stopped at bakery counter. I just wanted a doughnut. I haven’t had a doughnut in months & months. The display case was full of cakes for Valentines Day. They were all sold out of doughnuts but they had an apple fritter. Yes, yes I did:lol:
I’ve got husbands laundry in washer, litter boxes cleaned & I turned on the little oil radiator heater in my craft room. I have not been in there since October. No wonder I’ve lost my mojo. I have some much to get rid of that I do not use. I have many magazines of Cloth Paper Scissors to go through & I’m going to give those to a lady at the library.
Char—It sounds like much improvement for Ted. Keith had one of those shower benches at home when he had his car accident. It goes together quickly & 2 of the feet stay on the floor out of the tub & 2 inside the tub. I also got a hand held shower head that the neighbor put up for me so it worked out great.
Ellen—WOW that is a lot so snow.
Tracy—Have you ever watched a Youtuber called Dr. Oto Kano on watercolors. She is great with studying colors & pigments. I’m thinking I need a class to get back into the groove.
Sylvia—Hoping that you get good results today.
Darla—Glad that your husband has a weekend off. You two deserve it. Your son has come a long way. Good for him.
Geoff—The Eyelia treatments have really helped me. I would probably be blind without them.
Sharon—That was a good dream. Going to that concert was the best thing in 2018 for me.
Ok everyone Hi & have a great day
Anita
February 8, 2019 at 1:54 pm #778392Betty, I was just checking in with a friend in Nanaimo – I don’t think they’re getting much of anything out of this! We have wind in the forecast too, although (THANKFULLY) not so much for where I’m located. The trees and shrubs here STILL have a couple inches of snow on them from last weekend, so I’m kind of thinking power outages might be happening around here before all is said and done.
Geoff, that is priceless!
Lynn, I think I know that black hole! It sucks in both knitting projects and eventually, one sock from each pair I buy

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.”. Martin Luther King, Jr.February 8, 2019 at 2:15 pm #778386Tracy, That is the problem with college classes in art. I was not taught how to do anything. They told us the paints they wanted us to use, the paper/canvas, and then you were on your own. Some of the classes followed a text book, and we would create a project. The professor would walk around and make a few suggestions. You are there to explore your creativity. At the end of each class, we would get to critique each other. I know that taking classes from Char or Doug would be totally different.
