This is just out of my own curiosity, as I only get inspired to paint at night, typically after my son has gone to bed, and many times even after my husband goes to bed. I just don’t have the creative energy during the day for some reason.
So I was just wondering, is this just me? Or do most people paint during the ‘work-day’.
I have a full time job, and therefore cannot paint during the week days, but I could on weekends if I tried, but still don’t get “in the mood” until late nighttime, usually after 8 or 9 p.m.
July 1, 2008 at 5:14 pm #1102539Great topic and I too will be interested to hear when others paint.
We all dream of the perfect studio with great lighting. I have a make do studio but poor lighting so I tend to take the easel outside as the lighting under verandah is great and its nice to be outside. So hence, I tend to paint between 10am and 3pm.

July 1, 2008 at 5:33 pm #1102544You need a category for all day and evening… I think, how many hours a day do you paint? would be interesting to know. If I can, for me it’s 8-10 hours on my artwork.

I think it might have to do with a strict schooling. I couldn’t draw until after 4 pm every day. Even when I had art class first thing in the morning, I just didn’t like to work on that stuff. I’m not lazy in the morning, I’ll workout, do just about anything physical to start my day, but I just have an impossible time sitting at an easel or drawing board first thing in the a.m.
The problem is I can’t paint in the evening, the best light is morning to early afternoon here. It feels akward as heck and I’m completely unenthused for art at that time, but i force myself anyway. Since I underpaint first in just a single tone I do those at night with the mediocore lighting while I’m inspired, than work through the actual painting during the day, when I’m not inspired, but I hav great light.
July 1, 2008 at 7:03 pm #1102548I paint whenever the mood strikes .. providing that I am at home If I make a schedule or set time aside for it, it will feel like work and I will lose the inspiration and motivation.

July 1, 2008 at 10:21 pm #1102528I’m a morning person. From the time I get up until about noon is my painting time. By afternoon I’m losing concentration. In the evening I usually do chores like preparing panels, stretching canvas, cleaning brushes–things that don’t take much thought.
July 2, 2008 at 12:01 pm #1102529What an interesting poll; I love hearing about the habits of others!
I have a young son (birthday is coming up fast!) and last month started walking…and now taking only one nap a day. I was dreading that time coming, but today I decided it actually works out pretty well! So long as I can get housework done in the morning, by naptime in the afternoon, I am in a creative mood. I realized today that happens to be my natural time, anyway. Back in the day when I had all day to myself to paint, try as I might, I rarely got myself painting early. And I’ve never been good at doing it in the evening because of dinner and hanging out time.
I used to feel a little bad about it because I was trying to get as much painting in as I could. Now I’ve learned to just go with the flow.
So yay for naps!

July 2, 2008 at 8:18 pm #1102531With no concern for external factors, I like to paint from about 9:00AM to 2:00 or 3:00 PM, with a few breaks for food and on-line chats/emails. Mornings are best, waking up with ideas and energy. Also, I have the most space available in the three car garage after my wife has left for work.
Temperarture is the main external factor — Southern California summers are brutal and often I can only paint until around noon. Wind is another factor — in cooler weather when I can open the garage doors, tremendous winds will come up and blow debris into the wet paint. Those are the two main external factors that limit my painting times.
Ideally, I like to paint for about four hours straight before I start “crashing” and need a break.July 2, 2008 at 9:24 pm #1102535Interesting! I checked all the choices, and as we can see by the number of voters vs the number of votes, I’m not alone that did multiple choices!
For me, it’a a matter of schedule, day work, social obligations etc… I really prefer painting in daylight, but I have to do compromises and often paint at night in my studio. I have decent light, though it could be better…
As I work full time, I use to spend most of my saturdays painting; on week nights I prepare my stuff and read, and paint if I want to. I’m in that part of my life where my kids are grown ups and I can enjoy a lot of my free time painting.Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and would feel like painting… but never did it!!!
Really, in a perfect world, I would be painting many hours a day, every day!
