Is there anyplace I can get copyright-free nude photos from?
October 8, 2003 at 9:56 am #1017279I’m sure someone has asked this before, coolartiste. If you click the search button and search under nude reference photos, I’m sure a lot of information will come up.
I can’t help you with erotica but I’ve heard that a good resource for academic nude poses can be found in the book and CD, Virtual Pose. I think they have three books. With the CD, you can rotate each pose 360 degrees and view it from any angle. Seems like its worth it.

I purchased the first two and used them. The third is expected out in March of 2004.
The first book is nearly impossible to find these days, but the creator of Virtual Pose has put all the poses on the Official web site for purchase and download.

Rosic"I'm traveling 33 1/3 RPM's in an IPOD world..."October 9, 2003 at 2:25 am #1017286A couple of the photo reference books I have on hand are:
The Fuigure in Motion, A Visual Reference for Artists by Thomas Easley, Photos by Mark Smith
The Female Figure in Movement by Thomas Jennings
The Human Figure A Photographic Reference for Artists by Erik A. Ruby–the thing I don’t like about this book is the male model’s wearing of a jock strap.
I’ve had male models in a drawing class who wore them and find that it interfers with the flow of drawing the nude. I’ve found it less distracting to my work if they wear a Speedo or shorts if too modest to pose completely nude.
Not to mention that my ex played a lot of basketball and I washed more than my share of stinky, sweaty jock straps."If you cannot get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance."
None of my work is to be copied or used without my knowledge and prior consent.

What I didn’t like about Ruby’s book was that he had only one male model and one female (with the exception of a few shots of babies and elderly folk). The woman had a funny haircut and a funny mouth, so pictures are prone to looking wrong, even when drawn correctly.
I prefer The Nude Figure, by Mark Edward Smith. He uses several different models, and has tons of poses. I even recently found a website for an artist who painted figurative paintings using the photos from this book It ruined it for me, but most art buyers probably wouldn’t recognize the pictures.
I like the virtual pose idea. Not sure I’m ready to shell out the bucks for it.

October 13, 2003 at 3:43 pm #1017283I bought a book off of eBay not long ago. It’s called Illustrator’s Reference Nudes. Although it’s a bit older, it has many classic poses in it, which are photographed from many different angles around the body. There are both male and female poses and I think it’s a great tool for learning to draw the human figure. I’m including a link to one currently on eBay UK, so that you can have see what it looks, but it may not be worth shipping from here. I imagine it’s pretty easy to come by in the USA too. I believe there are also some updated versions.

October 17, 2003 at 6:21 am #1017289The reason I was asking for copyright-free nude photos was so I could make nude drawings & paintings and sell them on Ebay without getting into trouble over copyright infringement. So that’s what I’m looking for. I already can get unlimited numbers of nude photos to practice from, but they’re all copyrighted, so I can’t sell any of the drawings.

It seems to me that the obvious solution would be to take your own photos.

"Good chocolate is healthy. Good coffee is a stay of execution." -- R. StevensOctober 17, 2003 at 1:08 pm #1017287I have found that you can go to most models or photographers web sites and they will give you permission to use their work and most times they are quite accommodating. I will look up a few and update you.
October 18, 2003 at 10:20 am #1017276"I would paint something and be satisfied with it for a period of time and then, foolishly, I would go into it again and destroy it. That became so painful that I stopped painting for about five years. I’d get to a place, maybe an ecstatic moment, or maybe not that good, but somehow it was concluded... Why go and mess with it? But the idea would come to go back into it, assuming that the more times I’d go back into it, the better it’d get. Well, it’s just the reverse!! It doesn’t work that way. It’s a gift. It’s kind of given to you" -Nathan Oliveira

[/B]While the book I recommended is copyrighted, the front flap of the cover says “for professional illustrators, amateur artists, and anyone who needs an instant reference”. I have interpreted it to mean that while the book should not be reproduced, the poses are classic poses that are intended as reference for any most artistic uses.
I’m not positive, but I think some of the other suggestions here are intended for the same sorts of purposes. They are each model poses specifically marketed to arists, as opposed to artistic photographs.

October 18, 2003 at 5:06 pm #1017280Does it have to be photographs? One of the WC artists formed a group of artists that hire their own model for a group session once a week. The model signs a release so the artists can show and sell their work.
