I had planned to do this again in another medium, so this is just from my sketchbook, but it is as finished as it will ever be in watercolor, so thought it should go here instead of the studio section.
If any mod is out there, why does this subforum specifically mention not using the code sourcing to utilize offsite images embedded? They have a much higher resolution that way and reduce the on site file load.
Edit: Oh right, this is 8.5 x 5.5 inches, on Strathmore Series 400 sketchbook paper, Casein primed page, then all watercolor on top with some ball point pen for defining lines. I could have done all the linework with watercolor as well, but I wanted them to have a graphic appeal that is often lost with watercolor.

Painting is not everything in life - but without painting everything is nothing!July 1, 2018 at 1:41 am #650016July 1, 2018 at 3:29 am #650022Hi Delo. What’s so valuable to me is that you used the source image as inspiration and didn’t slavishly copy it (we all know the pitfalls with photo images).
The line quality is it’s main appeal. Thanks for sharing it.
As long as there is light, I will paint it.
July 8, 2018 at 3:12 am #650017Hey thanks John! I was responding to this when the server must have crashed shortly there after and lost my response somehow. Well at any rate, thanks for taking a look!
I find it interesting that the highest praise seems to come to those who either go completely contrary to any kind of copying (abstract art), or slavish copying (photo/hyperrealism). It seems unusual to me because there is a distinct lack of appreciation for artwork that is between the extremes usually, and invention of elements or combining of multiple photographs seem to not garner much respect at all even while it may be one of the difficult things to do.
Well, thanks again for taking a look. I should get in here in the watercolor forums more often, I have really learned a great deal from my recent exploration of the medium. Never had tried altering my surface quality with gelatin size before reading about watercolor paper (or casein size, in the case of what I used for this one). Also, recently utilized this kind of pen and wash approach with colored pencils as a way to quickly get an impression of color for a larger work, it worked amazingly for my purposes and I am sure I will end up using the technique more often.

Hi ah, not at all. I much prefer ‘art’ than copying a photo perfect… except for the drawing section. Last month I joined in with drawing challenge and tried to make it as close to realistic as I could with freehand drawing But when I do my own stuff, it usually is based on a photo or ideas of what to do with photos…with my interpretation not copied .
For the challenges in water colour and water media I usually go with the flow and do close representations, but honestly, re your cave…. wonderful work. Do art…. which is the point of all this. ! Keep going…
and incidentally, while you work on your cave …. I am keening watching the cave evacuation story on the news for the Thai boys… and fingers crossed that all the divers, all the boys, and everyone involved have luck on their side.Painting is a complete distraction. I know of nothing which, without exhausting the body, more entirely absorbs the mind. Winston Churchill
July 21, 2018 at 4:07 am #650020That is a very large cave mouth. We have a large cave system here in Kentucky. When I lived in Massachusetts I visited a cave over in New York, but ended up with pneumonia after visiting it. I can imagine you were drawn to the abstractual nature of the scene. It almost has a spiral form.
