I said I would come back and give my humble opinion of Canson Touch. Boy, I really like it. Sturdy and tough….both the paper and board. You can just feel the quality. Comes in about 14 colors.
When some of the companies first made sanded papers, they did not have pan pastels in mind. These papers are so rough in many cases that you could scrape the barnacles off a ship with them.
I like pastelmat but I am not rich.
Canson touch has just the right price and just the right sanded surface to take pan tools without destroying them and allowing layers of sticks.I have an example under “CANSON touch TEST” in the gallery. I will post it now.

I really like pastelmat for pan work but keep an open mind for alternatives…
and I agree on some of those sandpapers….tied of having bare finger tips trying to blend….. yes, I have the pipe insulation, but nothing better than the bare fingers…..:smug:

It is certainly worth getting a sheet or two. It really takes a watercolor or acrylic wash very well.

June 4, 2012 at 9:05 pm #1164864I tried both the board and the paper and was much more impressed with the board. The paper seemed to have flat spots similar to AS Tiger paper.

June 8, 2012 at 7:56 pm #1164875I love love love the Touch paper! The colors are fantastic and seem colorfast too. I noted my Pastelmat colors faded in a few months while waiting to be used. The black is not black in Pastelmat – it is more of a dark gray. But black in Touch is black, plus there are so many more colors. I was told in pastel club last week that the Touch can warp much easier than Pastelmat with a wet underpainting. Haven’t tested that yet tho.
June 9, 2012 at 2:37 am #1164870Does anyone know where in Europe one can order the Touch? I haven’t found any sources over here yet.

My sketching blog: http://www.urbanjournal.orgJune 21, 2012 at 10:21 am #1164872I use the touch board and I love it holds many many layers and super with watercolour. And Doesn’t wear the fingers to the bone like sanded papers.
June 21, 2012 at 10:52 am #1164869Mercy, Jacksons in GB stock it. I was going to give you a link but their site is down for maintenance today.
I’ve just got a sheet and tried it the other day – the painting is in the Spotlight thread.
What I was surprised about was that it does have a texture like standard pastel papers, like a bubble effect that shows with the first layers of pastel. The pastel doesn’t cover as well initially as P mat or sanded papers and I found I had to blend the BG to get rid of those bits of the paper colour which show through. When blended there is no trace of the texture left.
It seems not to take as many layers as Pmat or sanded either. Haven’t actually flicked the back yet to see if there is any “fallout”.
I haven’t used pans on it yet.Don’t know how much Pmat costs in the US but the Pmat sheets are bigger. The canson is not only smaller but comes with a 1/2 inch border (like Colourfix) which makes it even smaller. Haven’t had my calculator on it but I think the Pmat is comparable in price here….and I like it better!

June 21, 2012 at 12:37 pm #1164873Ruthie: Pastelmat is much more expensive than the Touch…at least in the USA. Blick sells Pastelmat for $10.08 a sheet which translates to £6.45 in your currency.
The Canson Touch is $7.19 (£4.60) a sheet or $5.89 (£3.76) a sheet if you buy more than 10. There is no bulk discount for the Pastelmat. I hope you guys are able to get the Pastelmat for less!
I prefer the Pastelmat to all other pastel papers, but the price keeps me away. I did like the Touch when I tried it, but priming my own papers with Colourfix primer seems to be the most economical sanded surface.
