        Hi all,

I know it’s an odd question but I have to make this tiny horse head to adorn something for a friend.  Because I’m working so small and haven’t sculpted with earth clay or any clay for years and years, I’d feel more comfortable having the basic horse head done in real clay (fired), and then add just a few tiny details with polymer and bake in oven to harder the polymer.  Then I’ll paint it.

I’ve already got most of the head formed in the earth clay.  It was a lot nicer to work with for me, but dealing with drying times during the various stages is also not learned overnight.  That’s why I’d like to add tiny veins and things like this in the polymer if possible  (onto the fired clay).

From what I’ve read you can add fresh or soft polymer to baked polymer clay but I think you have to use a special polymer glue for this?  That must be before rebaking in the oven?  Would I need glue to add polymer to fired clay?  Then bake the head entire in oven?

I tried making the horses head from just polymer first and it got off to a nice start but later it melted in my hands to a Dali-esque / 2D-look from being over-handled (30m was too much for it, got warm and lost it’s shape).

        Any suggestions appreciated!

If you want to attach the polymer clay directly to the fired clay, you’ll need to use a compatible adhesive. Epoxy-based adhesives or strong superglues work well for bonding polymer clay to other materials. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the area where you want to attach the polymer clay and press it firmly in place. Once the polymer clay details are securely attached, you can proceed to bake the entire piece in the oven.
