I have started a free course on drawing at drawabox.com, and it starts with the most basic skills, how to draw a line, including how to use your shoulder to draw. I am finding it very helpful, so that made me think that I’ve never really received any instruction on how to paint a brush stroke. Are there any books or videos that cover this that you think are good?

I always liked this video …. the difference between stroking paint on with a full brush versus fiddling and blending with the paint. It,s more in the style of Sargent, van Gogh, Rembrandt and Velasques I reckon.

Thank you for that video. I had seen it some years ago and had forgotten about it. I am looking for something longer and more instructional or a book or good article. In addition to the technique that David Leffel is talking about in the video, I’d like to learn more about how to make a shape with one continuous brush stroke (as I think is done with Sumi E brush painting). And, besides that I don’t know what I want to learn as I don’t know what I don’t know, or so I am learning from drawabox.com.

Thank you, Shenko. I bought it for my Kindle and read it today. This is just the sort of thing I am looking for. I mean, who knew that there are a variety of ways to load a brush with paint? Also, the discussion of brush strokes for blending was very helpful. Thank you for the recommendation.

Mark Christopher Weber’s book is exceptionally good at explaining the importance of brush loading and how to pull a brush stroke. In fact, it is the best book available on the market for that topic. Also, it is an entertaining read.

Of special note, the part about paint consistency is superb… the Peanut Butter to Cooking oil scale is a great way to think of the paint consistency.

This reminds me of Golf Cricket and Tennis. Performing the right stroke/shot. Practice is better than a book. Leffel i always thought was having a laugh when he talked about this. He knows that to get good you have to paint a lot and thats really the secret to anything you want to master. Thousands of hours of practice.

Thanks for this link. I personally don’t like most paintings using the loose brush strokes he explains but his comments about how to think and execute them is very informative. His explanation now explains some of the artists vids that I watch so I will definitely watch them differently next time. With this said I’m now thinking how I can incorporate what he said into into certain areas of my own painting while still maintaining what I like.
