I seem to be on a roll tonight. What’s ya’lls favorite store to order online from as watercolorists? I live in the middle of Missouri and the only art store is a Michael’s and a Hobby Lobby that’s 30 minutes away. Ordering online seems to be the best way to get supplies. So what are your ideas?

Debra Spinks Art on Facebook & InstagramMay 27, 2004 at 12:26 am #1031581I always order from Cheap Joe’s or Dick Blick. Both are scrupulously honest and very careful in filling orders. (However, I usually try to go to Cheap Joe’s outlet store because it is such a fun place to shop and not too far from where I live.)
C&C is welcome.
RichardMay 27, 2004 at 1:22 am #1031547I visited North Carolina for the first time in 20 years last summer to visit hubby’s family in Ramseur. Made sure to take a day trip up the mountain to Cheap Joe’s. Wish I could come back every year. Maybe I will, actually. Hubby wants to move back across country to be closer to family, looking for work between Charlotte and Greensboro. If it works out, I’ll get to retire and paint all day – Yippee!!)

MY BLOG
My Youtube videosMay 27, 2004 at 4:31 am #1031585I voted for Cheap Joe’s. But I have oredered many things from Dick Blick and been very satisfied. CJ’s does have better prices usually, but DB has a bigger selection.

those that do!" ~ Edgar DegasMay 27, 2004 at 7:51 am #1031598I’m a big fan of Daniel Smith paints, and the paper I use goes on sale quite often so I seem to do most, if not all, of my ordering from DS. I can spend an hour on the phone with Allison or Sofie getting ideas and advice, or just plain yakking up a storm. The supplies (especially the paper) comes packed so well. They also use peanuts make from corn starch, rather than stryofoam so they are completely biodegradable. In fact, if you get them wet they completely dissappear.
I ordered once from CJ and was very pleased with their service also. I had a gift cert. for Dick Blick, and also found them very nice to work with. If I weren’t using DS paints I would probably use a variety of different online stores.

My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular. ~~~~Adlai E. Stevenson Jr.May 27, 2004 at 1:06 pm #1031601I have the same problem, even though I live in Charlotte (a metropolitan area encompassing half a million souls! — but proud of being a city that’s all about business). I won’t do the poll, since I can’t give one answer:
I bought my lovely Escoda (1212) brushes from http://www.aoeartworld.com/brushes.html in Florida — they were pleasant on the phone (toll-free number listed on their site), accepted a USPS money order, and delivered very quickly for only about $5 (shipping). Their brush prices were also very cheap (that is, for 1 medium plus 1 large, handmade, Tajmyr-Kolinsky sable brushes!). An art supply store in Rochester (with a name something like finearts.com) sells an Escoda sable flat 1″, with a funny name like Arkwala(?) which I would like to own someday — but at $90, this will have to wait for next Christmas, or beyond!
P.S. [snip]from Handprint.com: The Escoda 1316 kolinsky sable flat… is unfortunately hard to find in the USA, but Rochester Art Supply (linked above) sells a custom brush, the Escoda Akwarela flat… …the brush is great for wash applications where the softness of the hairs is important… These durable brushes handle nicely, release paint with an even flow, and clean up well. A superb value for the price. Prices: #12 (1/2″), US$25.00; #20 (1″), US$90.00. [/snip]
I bought my watercolor paper from currys.com since they deliver for free — and there’s a 40% discount for American dollars (they’re Canadian). To make the order large enough to qualify for free shipping (only about $25!), I often order kneaded erasers or erasing shields or pencils, etc. from them, too.
My little Ott-lite “true-color” lamp came from eBay, as did my easel and my initial batch of W/N artists’ quality watercolor tubes. Now that my palette is set, however, I’ll probably get replacement W/N tubes from Curry’s, in the larger 14ml. size, as I need them. (But eBay’s was a good start: about 64 5ml. tubes for $72, with shipping. True, I now have more than 30 tubes I may never use — but $72 was still a good price for just the 19 5 ml. colors used in my “normal palette,” not to mention a few others I use very infrequently.)
Dick Blick has an excellent reputation for customer service and shipping, and stocks a very wide variety of everything, so if you had a large, diverse order in mind, they may be best! Whenever I google for some weird item, they always seem to have it, even when no-one else does.
There was a forum in another area (Studio Tips?) in which various artists discussed ordering online, and several had bad experiences with some of the online retailers in your poll. Everyone seemed to agree Dick Blick’s (a sponsor here) does online retailing more responsively. One of the Dick Blick’s people who took part in that forum also said he might set up a special contact person (or something) for WC members, to make sure that they continue to get excellent service and any problems are fixed promptly.
Hope this helps.

May 27, 2004 at 1:55 pm #1031549I try to order from Dick Blick, because they are a WC! sponsor, and, also, I ordered by phone from them before there was an internet!! (Yes, I’m older than dirt!)
However, because I’m retired and have limited funds for painting supplies, I also shop Cheap Joe’s, Curry’s, and Daniel Smith’s sales, and compare their prices to Dick Blick. (I’m old, but not stupid! LOL)
It just depends on who has what on sale when I need it!
