August 2019 Challenge
“You Are Painting Your Emotions”
The challenge this month is to tap into our true emotions and then apply that to a painting. This is not so easy to do. Bringing emotion into art has always been a goal for any artist.
This challenge will involve creating an emotional palette and then creating your masterpiece. There have been many studies showing that emotions can be categorized as follows:
1. Happiness
2. Sadness
3. Disgust
4. Fear
5. Surprise
6. Anger
The challenge:
Step 1: Pick 2 emotions from the list above.
Step 2: Explore your vast paint box and pick 4 (and only 4) colors to describe each emotion your have selected. Try untried colors maybe. You will share your palette on the 21st. For example, if you choose Anger and Disgust. You would have 4 colors each for your emotional palette to share on the 21st (this is part 1 of your post on the 21st).
Step 3: Now, create a painting (or two) using only one (or both) of the palettes you have created. And share that on the 21st (part 2 of your post on the 21st).
Advice, your emotions palette will transfer to your painting better when you are in that emotional moment. So watch that movie, hear that music, read that book passage, look at the photo album, remember that thought, watch the news, etc. to stir your emotional creativity and pick those colors to paint! You might be surprised at the results. Questions? Ask me please.
Abstracts, realism, expressionism, tonalism, etc. are all fair game in this challenge.
PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORKS TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH. Much more exciting and fun to see what ‘masterpieces’ appear! If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st
At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.
**Please note, the single ‘reveal’ date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ……that’s the whole point of it being called ‘Different Strokes’!
By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge – just don’t post images!!!
OK – Lets have some fun!

July 31, 2019 at 10:49 pm #861640WOW! these challenges get more complex as the time moves on. I would hope that someone would try #1 and #2 These are primarily human emotions. I have never seen a surprised sunrise or an angry building or a disgusted still life.
For me maybe Aug I’ll just sit back and wait for the results.July 31, 2019 at 10:57 pm #861601Old hobby…hope you join in.

August 1, 2019 at 5:31 am #861590Oh my goodness Carl – you do test us!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps we should give everyone extra time for 2 paintings – (thinks desperately how to manage one never mind two!!!):lol:Thank you for this – and the thinking behind it, and the prep!
I will do my best – well, to paint – whether the result will be any good is another matter!
Cheers, Maureen
Forum projects: Plant Parade projects in the Florals/Botanicals forum , WDE in the All Media Art Events , Different Strokes in Acrylics forum .August 1, 2019 at 7:24 am #861667Thanks Carl, this is a different challenge for sure.
I know certain colours represent a genre – but that’s not quite what you are asking is it. ?
Oh wow, and I thought my challenge last month might have been a bit hard.
Old hobbyist – if you are not participating can I plagiarise your ‘Halloween dolls’ for this challenge… just joking…
but there you are… you must have had a feeling when you painted those… which btw are terrific and certainly evokes emotions for the viewer.Right then, onwards and forwards !
cheers

August 1, 2019 at 9:19 pm #861622Hmmmm……. in Behavior we define different emotions and they are always singing along in my head. Generally we’ll ask the person we’re chatting with to identify their feelings-
Mad, sad, glad, hurt, scared, ashamed.
So to your

[*]Happiness
Sadness
Disgust
Fear

AngerI would match

Scared

MadHurt and ashamed (shame) go unmatched.
Quite honestly this is what I do in the real world sitting (via internet) trying to discuss psychology text books. Different cultures express basic emotions differently. And these emotions even vary greatly within a single family. Another emotion we toss around each time we get into this is “guilt”. Is guilt a basic human emotion OR is it a response one makes to another’s emotion?
Weren’t Monthly challenges much more fun before I butted in?
I never thought this would come up here but, well don’t blame me! I think (too much apparently) that it’s almost impossible to bring in a bunch of people from all over the world and find everything to be “in common”. (This would be where the anthropologist pipes in and we shut him down.) I wonder if this is one of the basic differences in art between all the cultures.

The question is not what you look at, but what you see.
-Henry David ThoreauAugust 1, 2019 at 9:32 pm #861602Some random added host thoughts on this challenge.
After searching the internet, I found a number of classes that teach on how to express emotion in art. Some focus on colors, or light, or values. Many are very detailed and complex. I tried to bring this down to bare minimums for this challenge. Old Hobby is right we can easily paint what we see, but, can we paint what we feel. That is the challenge. It will be a learning experience for me. I rarely paint when I am angry, but if I did, what would the result be and what colors would I use? Best find some wide open space too .
Colors – Merri hit on the idea that there are certain colors that are routinely associated with an emotion. This is very true. Yellow = joy, happiness. Red = passion, energy etc…. However, there is room to break the rules and go outside the paint box. Can I use my never used Magenta Rose Pink hue tube of paint for fear? Ha!
Categories – In the six categories, there can be multiple sub categories. For example, Happiness = contentment, satisfaction, joy, bliss etc. Fear = phobias, extinction, separation etc…. So while these 6 categories are high level, you can also think within the categories too.
Some artists who mastered in color and emotion:
Edvard Munch
Vincent van Gogh

August 2, 2019 at 1:02 am #861653Our little dog got into the chicken coop and killed my 8 young roosters. I was surprised at his strength to pull it off and yet so angry that I felt I needed to cool down a few days before even attempting such a painting. My moods somehow do affect my choice of color .

August 2, 2019 at 1:29 am #861663I always look forward to the challenges! Thanks for setting this up, you and all our wonderful hosts. This is one of deep ones…
C&C welcome, the more incisive the better...

So sorry to hear.
I bet you are having a hard time reconciling that puppy did what came natural to him, instincts etc. sad all the same.Painting is a complete distraction. I know of nothing which, without exhausting the body, more entirely absorbs the mind. Winston Churchill
August 2, 2019 at 10:08 am #861654Thanks Merri. I feel it’s a case of no upbringing when the dog was young, and we got him at age 7years. On the other hand, this little mutt has already killed 6 of our country’s very poisonous snakes, so he stays for now.
