I’m helping out a local non-profit museum with an exhibit of a late artist. One of the pieces is a wonderful 8″x10″ acrylic self-portrait on canvas. It was removed from its stretcher bars years ago and we’re trying to think of a nice way to hang it. There’s not enough canvas on the sides to pull, so I can’t restretch it onto new stretcher bars.

I was thinking of mounting it onto a hard surface. I just bought a nice unprimed wood panel from Blick with 1″ sides. I was thinking of glueing the canvas painting onto the front wood surface.

Do any of you have any experience with mounting a painted canvas onto a hard surface like this? Do you have any tips or advice? I was thinking of sealing the wood front with Gamblin PVA. Then when it was dry, I would adhere the painting itself using PVA glue. I’d try to carefully burnish it to remove any air bubbles, then put a piece of cardboard on top of it, then books to weigh it down. Then I’d let it dry overnight. When it’s done, I would then trim the excess unpainted 1/2″ canvas that used to be stapled on the sides of the old stretcher bars.

        What do you guys think?

No direct experience here, but you would have 3 challenges: chemical interaction of the glue or wood surface with the canvas and paint (sealer idea is the right one, but I can’t tell you if your choice of sealer or glue is the right one); even adherence (which you seem to be reaching for with the weight to prevent bubbles); damage in the process physically to the paint surface.

I think you should contact an experienced art restoration house for answers, rather than opinions on a forum like this (no offense meant to anyone!) This is apparently considered a piece of value for an art institution, so nothing less would suffice IMHO.
