Morning Marcia…
thank you…sunrises actually…and plein air…a little more complicated here…I will say, you are really forced to work quickly with them…
are you back home?

Becca's Fine ArtJune 28, 2018 at 2:24 pm #632398Nancy, thanks for the tips! Yes I carry white too, as I think Marcia also does. It sounds like you have more room for stuff with a cart. My plan is to carry everything in a backpack, so i’ll have to pare things down to the minimum – a limited palette is going to be an absolute necessity! Why do you use stand oil rather than regular linseed oil? Yes, I’ll keep you posted.
Becca, oh my, the color in those sky paintings is absolutely gorgeous!
Marcia, your new WIP in woye is looking good!

June 28, 2018 at 3:50 pm #632509Annie, I guess I didn’t say what the cart consists of: it’s actually my outdoor easel, so I can set up a plein air and have my brushes and paints inside it, and a canvas set up on it. I wish I wasn’t so dumb that I can’t remember how to send a picture here, but it’s my elderly, beat-up outdoor easel…
The cryptoquote I just worked today seems very suited to artists.
“Forget your perfect offering; there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” – Leonard Cohen
Sometimes I think the perfection I aim for in my paintings is too much. I stopped subscribing to Artists magazine because it was posting what I call sloppy work. I just recently got a copy of Southwest Art, of which I’m also subscribed to, and I didn’t care very much for what it showed either.
But maybe that’s because I was spoiled – I went to this year’s display at The National Cowboy Art Museum this past Monday, where the paintings and sculptures are incredibly beautiful. (Most of which were for sale for ten thousand dollars or more!)

Heh, Nancy, yes, I presumed you’d have an easel, canvas and paints! I just wondered if there were other items you might recommend that you know come in useful but aren’t necessarily ordinarily thought of. I’m travelling very light and small, so I may transfer a few paints into some smaller 15ml tubes so that other things can fit more easily.
I’m still wondering about why stand oil instead of regular oil. Why do you use it, Nancy?
The Leonard Cohen poem (well, lyrics, really) from which your cryptoquote is taken is one of my very favorites. Here’s the whole thing:
Anthem
The birds, they sang
At the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don’t dwell on what
Has passed away
Or what is yet to beAh, the wars
They will be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
Bought and sold
And bought again
The dove is never freeRing the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets inWe asked for signs
The signs were sent:
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
Of every government
Signs for all to seeI can’t run no more
With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loud
But they’ve summoned, they’ve summoned up
A thundercloud
And they’re going to hear from meRing the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets inYou can add up the parts
But you won’t have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart, every heart
To love will come
But like a refugeeRing the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets inRing the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in
That’s how the light gets in
That’s how the light gets in~Leonard Cohen
It’s a lovely and inspiring message and very timely, so thanks for the reminder, Nancy. It wasn’t on my Pandora list but will be added now. And he is missed…

June 28, 2018 at 7:12 pm #632510Wow, Annie , I had no idea I was missing out on such a great poem. I had to print it out so I can read it as often as I want. The newspaper cryptoquotes never have that much room. I need to have that, and I’m sorry that I never found his work before!

Becca's Fine ArtJune 29, 2018 at 10:52 am #632568Good Monring Oilycats!!!
Thank you, Annie. I have plans to paint today, but am torn between doing a daylight scene, a nocturne, or the latest thing I thought of yesterday -a scene where the cabin is in the sun, but there are dark clouds in the background, possibly a thunderstorm. I will probably stick with the daylight scene… If it comes out well, then maybe I will do a series of 3.
I have to gallery sit tomorrow. Boo. But the gallery closes at 3, so the day won’t be completely lost.

"The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier they dug on hallowed ground
But the tomb of the unknown artist is nowhere to be found."June 29, 2018 at 4:23 pm #632511Annie, linseed oil seems to dry a little more quickly. I do use stand oil if it’s a large canvas I’m working on, because the slower drying means I can correct mistakes more quickly. I do take it stand oil with me for plein air because I don’t take a canvas that’s very large, and the speedier drying means it’s easier to get it home without messing it up.
Marcia, I’m actually going to work on a painting today! I haven’t touched a brush in more than a week, and I neeeeeed to!

June 30, 2018 at 11:07 am #632570Annie, your assignment doesn’t seem too difficult, considering where you live. There is a small chance of rain here next week, we shall see how it develops. Someone said the monsoons are expected to be heavy this year in Arizona, so maybe we will get a little of that.
Galley sitting today. Not overly excited about it, but it will go fast.

OMG, Marcia! Soooo cute!!!
I don’t know if I’m reading you right, but since my painting was started on a sunny late afternoon, my “assignment” has been postponed until the rain goes away. I may paint a “gray day” version, though.Nancy, you might remember Leonard Cohen not as a poet (which he certainly was anyway) but as a songwriter. Do you remember Judy Collins? He wrote many of her early songs such as “Suzanne,” “Bird on a Wire,” and “My Father.” He also wrote “Alelulia.” Thanks for the stand oil info. I often use walnut, which dries slower also, so I guess I can do without stand oil for the time being. Thanks for reminding me that’s the one I need to take with me.

June 30, 2018 at 5:19 pm #632571Aninie, I thought perhaps you had a plein air day lined up and got rained out, and maybe that happens frequently enough that you can almost guarantee it! In your neck of the woods, where it rains a lot, not such a surprise. If you could work that magic down here in the desert, you would be a popular gal!
Anyway, I hope the sun comes out for you soon.
There’s been a pretty steady stream of people, so the day has gone by quickly, only 30 minutes more!

I did finish my small “Exotic Roses” painting, and as soon as it’s dry, I’m taking it over to Hobby Lobby to get it framed for next week. But when you mentioned doing a Nocturne, I realized that, with the right insect repellent, I could go outside at night or very early in the morning (I would be so groggy, though!) to paint before the day gets really hot. I adore doing cloud paintings…

– Robert H. SchullerAnnie, I didn’t realize he was a lot more than a poet – to think of all that beautiful talent: lovely prose as well as wonderful music – people like that never really die. Their art lives on forever.

All human beings are dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together. - Jack KerouacJune 30, 2018 at 6:23 pm #632413Marcia, yeah, I should have expected rain, but in my excitement wanted to keep going, so when it inevitably arrived, forecast for a week or so, I was very disappointed. But the 4th of July is very soon, and often marks the beginning of summer weather-wise, so I’ll have plenty of other opportunities. I hope you’ll find time to paint today.
Nancy, you’re so right about artists such as Cohen living on. I went to a special remembrance event for him not long after he died. There were at least 500 people there and local artists performed selections of his songs. It was sad, but beautiful, and I know many will remember him always. Great idea to do plein air outings early and late – the slanting light is so much better then anyway.
