Any ideas on riding house of ants – seems to be heat with these ones – their not looking for sweets or water – larger black ones- these at least didn’t bite. Know I’ve sprayed or waxed a couple thousand today – finally started using my hand wax system system for arthritis and making strings of was and collecting and mashing them with the soft wax –
what a waste of a day – tried those little black traps – where they are supposed to carry it back to nest – corn starch – borax – tea tree oil works for half of day – out of it – used it last year – even was down to using hair spray today – know their in the walls – but so allergic to most industrial stuff – exactly been letting spiders stay in corner to see if that helped – gee it is definitely is a full moon. Last week it was mosquitos or some type of flying biting bug on the other side of the room and biting reddish ants and of course I was on deadline for photo layout and printing for customer so couldn’t stop to move computer area – so keep vacuming them – I need a break
maybe just leave and let the ants pay the rent – looking forward to getting close to beach Wednesday – have business appointment there – maybe I’ll be able to see it from the freeway~!!!!

August 12, 2003 at 12:33 am #1013724Vikki – I bet you won’t want to try this, but I heard that they won’t cross cucumber strips. Haven’t tried it, can’t figure out why it would work and it sounds like a lot of work to lay it down and then gather it all up. Just had to mention it tho’.

August 12, 2003 at 12:50 am #1013721Vikki, just how big are these ants? If there carpenter ants then you got trouble, we had to replace a wall because of the little buggers.
A friend mentioned the other day that she found using vinegar got rid of her ant problem, she sprayed it along their path and they wouldn’t go back. Might want to give that a try.
Good luck,
nNatasha

August 12, 2003 at 11:13 am #1013719Also sprasy your counter tops with clorox! This will rid them from counter tops. Also wwas told to put moth balls around the outside of the house. Thiswill keep snakes, and other critters away. Hope this helps.
August 12, 2003 at 11:32 am #1013729The best thing would be to borrow somebody’s chickens then those critters wouldn’t stand a chance of getting into your house. I realize that this wouldn’t work for everyone.
The trick with Comet (and probably with borax) is that you have to have an uninterupted line of the stuff, like a little dam. Any weakness in the levy and the ants will pour thru.
I grew up in the south west and they mostly came in looking for water and they drove my mom nuts. One summer we had a large condo built nearby and it must have distrubed the biggest nest in existence. You might ask yourself if anyone has dug up the earth nearby.
Note: a word of caution about moth balls. Yes, it does work, even with mice, but the active ingredient (can’t recall the exact name – starts with an N and ends in “ene”) in this stuff is really toxic! Not good in general but some people have a serious allergic reaction to it, and especially avoid if you have small children. Once you scatter it around it’s not like you can just go pick it back up if you don’t like it.

August 12, 2003 at 11:54 am #1013723Vinegar does work pretty well and another thing that works is find where they are coming from and fill the little hole with super glue, you can get the little tip right in there and it should seel up the hole.
Hope you find some thing that works ants are such a pain in the _$$.

Redside Designs EbayAugust 12, 2003 at 12:37 pm #1013732I recommend Terro (I found it at the garden store or other likely place). It is basically sugar and boric acid, weak enough to let them bring it home before they die. Also peppermint soap, it erases their trails and they hate it. I use Dr Bronner’s peppermint soap to wash all the surfaces.
If you want to get fancy here is what a local natural pest control co charged my friend $400 for:
take plates off plug outlets, spray in boric acid powder behind baseboards. That’s it. You could also spray in diamataceous earth if you wanted to, we used that for carpenter ants before.
With the carpenter ants we wound up calling the landlord, who came into our kitchen and sprayed poison on everything. Thanks a lot buddy, I wish he would have mentioned the poison first !
August 12, 2003 at 12:45 pm #1013731I had ants…not carpenter ones, but the little black ones….
and I WILL NOT use commercial toxic stuff…so I went to Costco and bought a few large containers of Cinnamon (ground) and poured an un-interrrupted line around the inside of the kitchen, along baseboard/walls that had small cracks, and pretty much everywhere else….
I left it there for about a week (messy, and ugly yes…) but the ants are gone…and they haven’t come back. Then I cleaned up and caulked the small cracks. Not a problem since….Patricia

August 12, 2003 at 12:59 pm #1013727Osage Orange(monkey balls) put around the inside of the house will keep most insects out including ants.
Vikki if you have them that bad I would use some industrial strenght stuff. Not to get you upm set but before the Gathering I had A womman I work with ask me to look at the roof over her bathroom(leaking)
I went out and checked the big black ants had totally chew thru half the joists. I had to replace most of the roof joist. So its a good idea to get rid of them quick. Borax works spread all around the foundation of the house. They carry it back to the nest and it is toxic to them.
I use it around our house. the only problem is after it rains you need to do it again.
Good Luck

Last year my mom moved to Palm Desert (notorious for bugs, roaches, etc) and her new house had these little white thingys plugged in a couple of outlets in every room. Not a bug in the place. I guess they’re ultrasonic or something like that.
Soooo, I bought some when I got home. Put one in every room, and there isn’t a bug in the place. Maybe the occasional confused housefly, but that’s it. The little things click as they work (not loudly), but you get used to it and it’s a fair trade for the lack of bugs!
They are made by Sunbeam, and probably a few others. I got them at Bed Bath and Beyond…probably on line. Worth every penny, I promise!OH, and they don’t bother my dogs at all….

August 12, 2003 at 1:57 pm #1013726August 12, 2003 at 10:34 pm #1013730Thanks for all the help – stuck wax in every crevice I could get to in bathroom yesterday – if you can imagine how funny that looked – and they just kept coming – and I couldn’t get up – started enjoying mashing the monsters with wax – sat with shower soaking wet washing them off my clothes /legs/arms – it was almost 100 degrees anyway – until my CG could get over and get me out of the shower and back in wheelchair
another but not new bead idea – got plenty to encased in wax to use as for details – NO sick of the monsters
there had been some major changes around back yards around me last week – neighbor about one yard over – has been working on his quote “vineyard”
– then next door neighbor – 10 feet away – cut down massive weeds some 5 feet high – rue – a patch about 30X60 ft which was blowing across into postage stamp backyard – I was thrilled since I could now enjoy my backyard
– and also means they are probably getting a dog again – they lost they last one – and he had become my best friend –
since my landlord won’t let me have a pet.finally tried windex with and sprayed base cabinet with it – CG is calking today – the landlord would just spray poison – they did last year and I had to leave for a week. Thinking I’ll try finding someone to do the borax in walls.
