Could someone tell me which UArt paper grit is closest to PastelMat?
Constructive critiques always appreciated.
Christine NeidhoferFebruary 16, 2018 at 9:47 am #566096none- pastelmat isn’t a sanded surface.

February 16, 2018 at 1:30 pm #566093Ok…so same question. Is there a UArt grit comparable to PastelMat?
Constructive critiques always appreciated.
Christine NeidhoferFebruary 16, 2018 at 1:33 pm #566097no… pastelmat is not a sanded surface– no grit– and Uart is archival sandpaper. Even the 600 grit Uart isn’t like pastelmat. They are just two different things. Try them both.

February 17, 2018 at 12:16 pm #566098Pastelmat is a coated surface that’s almost sticky, it’s like painting on the sticky side of tape. It is soft to the touch and feels smooth. It can take very fine detail marks like smooth paper, if you do mixed media a few accents with a pen you could even use the ultra fine tip Microns and so on with it. The texture is nothing like sanded papers.
Uart 800, the very finest grain, might get you nearly as much detail but the texture and look will be very different. Try PastelMat itself.
The nearest thing I’ve tried to it is Sennelier La Carte – which is coarser than PastelMat and has a problem with any moisture making gaps in the coating. Don’t sneeze on La Carte. PastelMat hasn’t got that problem.

I’ve been using PastelMat for a long time. I stand corrected. I’ve tried La Carte, didn’t like it.

Christine NeidhoferFebruary 18, 2018 at 10:29 pm #566092UART 800 and Pastelmat are my go to papers and I use them interchangeably. While the textures are different, they handle very similarly for detailed paintings. The only real difference between the 2 for me is that you can’t really blend the first couple of layers on Pastelmat but you can on UART. UART is way cheaper than Pastelmat too.

Thank you. Getting ready to order some supplies and wanted to know about UArt, along with the price. Good to know.
