Short Verion:
I’m painting a mural (about 8’x17′). Indoors, gets NO sunlight at all. In a Pediatrics office hallway, so I will varnish over to protect from random crayons and boogers. Can I paint the Underlayer large areas in regular latex (super quality) and then apply acrylics over for the detailed areas?
I heard they were compatable. What about wet-in-wet? Or should I let the latex dry 100%.I realize it’s not ideal, but will it work or will there be trouble?
I’m a glass artist-I lack techie knowledge with paint.Any tips would help. Thanks! Ed:wave:
This info may be in WC, but a few searches found little….I tried.
January 6, 2010 at 1:54 pm #1130548Hi Eddie, welcome to the DA forum! You can use regular latex and acrylics together. I’ve used them for years and find them very compatible. They work either way, separately or mixed together. I like Minwax Polycrylic satin finish for protection. You can thin it a little bit with water and apply with roller. 2-3 coats. Dries fast, low odor.
Show us what you do!

January 6, 2010 at 9:13 pm #1130549Hello Ed, and welcome!!
Ruth is definitely the one you want to get advice from, she’s the BEST! Here’s a thread we keep as a “sticky” because of all the great info in it… it starts from someone asking about using oils, but progresses to tons of useful mural info. I, too, use housepaints and artists acrylics when need be… just keep in mind that the word “latex” has become a bit of a misnomer, as not much actual latex is used in house paints anymore, it’s mostly acrylic now. So basically, it’s all the same, just that house paints tend to have more filler and less pigment than artists acrylics… though that has even changed as the house paints have become much more vibrant.
If you like it as house paint and the liquid consistency is ok with you, go for it! Anxious to see what you come up with, we love pictures here

EddieJanuary 6, 2010 at 11:24 pm #1130550Welcome Eddie. I would try to avoid flat latex as it is hard to manipulate. Eggshell is my fav but a satin is fine also. Looking forward to your posting pics Pat
