A friend asked me to paint her home. This is quite intimidating as I still thin of myself as a novice. I started it in studio – a rough sketch – but went on site today to begin the painting. I’m glad I did as the landscape looked VERY different in person than from her photo!
I will go back on Friday to work again. I need to fix a few of the trees and better differentiate some colors…depth isn’t great in some spots. I only gave the sky a quick fill as today was very grey and I need to finish the grassy areas up front.
When I go back I’ll also add better shadowing and start adding detail – like the flowered tree in the foreground.
What other things would you advise?
Thank you.
Thomas
June 28, 2018 at 6:26 am #648146I like this Thomas, what a lovely setting with the house nestling amongst those well shaped trees. I like what is happening in the bottom left-hand corner. I think you have made a good start. Plein Air is not my bag, but every man to his own. I could not have done what you have done here. Well done.

June 28, 2018 at 7:18 am #648147Thanks. There’s a wood line that extends past the viewer’s eye on the lower left. There are many overhanging branches too. I will be adding some of those details, and others I hope to minimize as I want the focus to be on the house.
The main focal point there is an Apple tree. Client wants to see it as it’s a favorite.
June 28, 2018 at 9:40 am #648145Very good start. Very well composed.
Go back at the same time of day. Try to paint in the shade. Having sunlight on the picture will mess up your color vision. As an extra bonus, it will fry your eyeballs.
Those lighter greens on the left are coming forward. I suppose they are patches of sunlight. Be careful about putting yellow or yellow-leaning colors in the distance. You could neutralize it with a bit of very light gray or a color half way between violet and magenta.
Personally I would go with the chromatic solution (yellow green + little bit of violet + even less magenta + white), but neutralizing yellow in this way is a tricky business and can be frustrating. So maybe just add some gray + white. Payne’s gray would be the best choice, in my opinion.
I just noticed the pinks back there. Neutralize them as well.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.
June 28, 2018 at 10:12 am #648141It’s a good start – and a good setting for you.
Try to get a photo from your painting position of the light you want to keep – because it constantly changes and that affects the shadows etc.
That patch of light green and pink – foreground foliage? – at that colour it might be too distracting .. you want the detail/foreground foliage to lead you in not stop you in your path!
Similarly – watch the direction of your brushstrokes on the light green patch, bottom right – in case they too lead you out, instead of in!
Looking good though!:)Cheers, Maureen

June 28, 2018 at 7:37 pm #648149Here’s where the project sits. I deepened the colors up front and will go back tomorrow to see/add where the sunlight hits to break up the dark area.
I’ll also add detail to the tree line on the right.

July 2, 2018 at 6:48 pm #648143It’s coming along nicely. I was about to suggest you eliminate the branch hanging down and then you did
This is going to be a lovely painting.

July 2, 2018 at 7:20 pm #648151Thank you. Yes, that upper branch was too much. I’m taking a few days off from this so I can see it with fresh eyes.
July 3, 2018 at 7:52 am #648142Developing very nicely Thomas.
