This is another oil sketch based on my visit to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. It is fun to be working with oils again. I had trouble finding the right stopping point. I finally just got tired of the subject. C&C welcome, Gary

March 25, 2024 at 5:16 am #1544108This is very good, and I think it is because you don’t overmix the paint and get some nice passages as a result.
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

March 25, 2024 at 2:35 pm #1544161AnonymousBeautiful colours, Gary, and interesting composition with the farm house slightly hidden. As Mike said your colours are always very clean and harmonious. Elegant. I showed it to my daughter and she liked it a lot

March 26, 2024 at 4:06 am #1544201Gary, a really good job. That red farm looks like a single cherry on a cake – very lovely effect.

C&C always welcomeMarch 26, 2024 at 9:05 am #1544230Thanks Mike, Fede and Ilya for your kind remarks. It was a fun painting to do. I will mention that this is oil over a casein underpainting. Casein takes oil paint very well and makes multiple layers a little easier. The reported downside of casein is that it can become brittle. It needs to be applied to a firm surface. Gary

March 26, 2024 at 9:41 am #1544233Gary, why does it “makes multiple layers a little easier”? Because it dries fast? But you are fluent with acrylics too.
By the way, is that casein paint that can have unpleasant smell?

C&C always welcomeMarch 26, 2024 at 10:57 am #1544248Ilya. Caseins do dry faster than oils. Although they dry very fast, they take a couple weeks to fully cure. They smell funny. I do not mind, others do.
I do not know why they take oil better than acrylic gesso. I read it somewhere and found it to be true. Below is a painting with a casein underpainting. I think you can almost see in the photo how oil paint has built up more than I would normally do. Gary

March 26, 2024 at 11:43 am #1544249AnonymousThat’s a beautiful painting Gary! I love the vibrancy of colours and the looseness. I love how the underpainting is coming through. Very often my paintings reach that stage and my daughter asks me to stop but I continue until I kill all the underpainting

C&C always welcomeMarch 27, 2024 at 8:19 am #1544323Thanks Fede. Oil over casein is fun and induces me to paint a little looser.
Thanks again Ilya. I am afraid that I was not very informative.

March 27, 2024 at 3:50 pm #1544355I love your approach Gary as the cool block-in really sets the stage for the warm notes on top. Beautiful indeed!

March 28, 2024 at 8:51 am #1544409Thanks Wes. I like oil over Casein but Casein is sometimes hard to use as it dries fast (sometimes even in the tube). The violet is not a complement to both greens and ochres, making it a nice start to a landscape.
Thanks Arlene. This was a roadside stop in Ireland in the 1970’s. Everywhere I looked were beautiful scenes easily composed into paintings.
Thanks again, Gary

March 28, 2024 at 8:59 am #1544411Hey Gary,
I am late getting in here this week as I have been away with work. Beautiful painting and I like that you mentionned having used an underpainting. I find it makes a world of difference on understanding values, depth and colour and in your case it certainly worked for a very nice result. I always enjoy your brushwork and this piece is balanced nicely.
An old artist buddy of mine that has been painting about 55 years said to me one time good underpainting= good painting and of course what he meant was it is the foundation to build on. Thanks once again for sharing.
Always enjoy your work Gary….have a super weekend.
