Worst flu day yet so my attitude was very much to “get the drawing out of the way” and it shows, especially in the stretched torso and squashed head! Still, it captures the pose and lighting correctly and it only took 20 minutes, so it’s not a complete loss

April 9, 2010 at 1:17 am #1138309Day 36. Still feeling awful, still drawing awful. Chose this one as I was interested to see if I could adequately capture the layering of the hair and the “squint” as she looked into bright sunlight. Got both of those OK, pity I stretched her head :rolleyes:

April 10, 2010 at 4:05 am #1138310#37 – Self-portrait with flu. Need I say more?
Two notes;
1. Drawn from how I feel, not from a mirror. So it’s expressionist?
2. No lines, this was a “scribbled” drawing done with a 4B. I found the technique quite fun!My website and blog -> LindsayMadeIt.com
April 11, 2010 at 1:51 am #1138311#38, still very unwell today, wanted to try the sort of hatching that follows the shape of the body rather than straight line hatching, and using a ballpoint pen. I’ll have to try it a few more times, I think I could grow to like it.

April 12, 2010 at 2:51 am #1138312Yesterday’s experiment with hatching clearly didn’t work for me, but that’s OK, part of the point of the 301 project is to discover what I like and don’t like.
Today I spent some time fooling around with Derwent Inktense pencils, and also some watercolour pencils and water-soluble wax pastels. You can see the “play” page at my blog if you’re interested.
However, today’s “proper” drawing is the same pose as yesterday, but this time done with the Inktense pencils. I definitely like working with them, so I’m really looking forward to the full set of 72 that’s on its way as I write

April 13, 2010 at 3:18 am #1138313#40, legs again, but back to plain old mechanical pencil plus a paper stump for blending. As fun as the Inktense are, it’s still easier to get nice smooth blends with a normal pencil.

April 14, 2010 at 12:50 am #1138314#41 – due to a severe shortage of time, I decided to quickly sketch a figure from my imagination. I was surprised it turned out to be a clothed man, not a nude woman, but the figure looks relatively balanced and proportional and the shading is reasonable, so I’m fairly pleased.

April 14, 2010 at 2:32 am #1138298Lindsay, you’re a hero for persevering despite that heavy flu
I wonder if you’d want to explore this curved, hatching style more – you seem to have a natural inclination for it.
April 14, 2010 at 3:13 am #1138315Thanks Roy – I probably will work more with curved hatching, I just need to improve my observation so the curves follow the form correctly

April 14, 2010 at 3:18 am #1138316Just to throw something completely bonkers into the mix … my full set of Derwent Inktense pencils arrived today so in between other things I’ve been doodling and experimenting with them.
I mostly just scribbled blocks of colour and then wetted them, but I also drew some specific things (eye, lips, rear end). Later I’ve come back with mechanical pencil and drawn some other things (alien disc, swords, worm/car hybrid), and then drawn over the blobs of colour with crosshatching – this is especially evident in the top three items and the little guy emerging from the rocks in the second row. He is so cute!
For some reason, when I work with mechanical pencils my style changes completely and my drawings are much more confident and interesting – check out that raygun! Anybody care to suggest why that might be?
No doubt a psychologist would have a field day telling me what all this stuff reveals about my subconscious

April 15, 2010 at 3:20 am #1138317At the end of the 301 project, I’d really like to have a good knowledge of anatomy, hence the labelling on these drawings … I seem to remember things better when I write them down. It’s almost like being back in school
Mechanical pencil again – it’s amazing to me how using mechanical pencil makes me feel much more confident and my drawings look (and feel, while I’m drawing them) much better. Strange, but true.

April 16, 2010 at 3:17 am #1138318I bought two Copic Multiliner SP’s today (a 0.35 and a BS) and had the best time doing some pen&ink style illustration, which is my favourite form of art (no doubt due to how much of it was used in the books I read as a kid). They work really well for this style;
So I decided to have a go at doing today’s 301 entry in that style too. I’d call this one a success … the beautiful reference photo was kindly supplied by http://lisajen-stock.deviantart.com
