Is a 30×40 stretched canvas too big to ship stretched for a reasonable price?
I think there is a size limit beyond which the price would go up a LOT but I forgot what it was. How much does USPS usually charge to ship that size canvas stretched?May 5, 2004 at 11:09 am #1030540It depends upon the destination. Rates and size limits vary. You can check the rates by inputting the size and weight and destination on their web site, http://www.usps.com
I shipped a 24″ x 36″ to Italy, for example, and it was *just barely* inside the size limit.

How much does USPS usually charge to ship that size canvas stretched?I shipped a 30 x 40 canvas inside a 44 x 36 x 6 in box via fed ex ground. I had it professionally packaged which cost me $35.00!!! (Don’t do that) Shipping was about $18.00 from St. Louis to Michigan. That was probably in the same zone so if it’s going across country it will quite a bit more. I decided from now on I when I order my regular canvases from Curry’s I will always order one huge canvas so I reuse the box they shipped it to me in.

and these are the figures I got.Express Mail Overnight $17.85
Priority Mail 2 Day(s) $19.75
Parcel Post 7 Day(s) $18.06Does that sound right to you? Seems low to me.
I expected more like $40 or even $80.May 5, 2004 at 11:27 am #1030543I had one canvas go over the size limit. I also made the mistake of having it professionally packed. It took the guy forever and he charge me $25. He used a mirror box, which was thicker and put it over the limit. I’ve been wrapping my own (inner wrap in cardboard and fashion my own box) but I believe I read something on this forum recently about the post office refusing to honor the insurance claim if you shipped in corrugated cardboard. I have not verified this.
The cost went up around $20, but the postal person told me that size limit is only for parcel and priority. They only count weight for Express Mail. So, I could ship it Express Mail for the same price (I think around $35) and my buyer was thrilled that she got the painting so quickly.

I expected more like $40 or even $80.The weight you have used it much too low. The last time I shipped a 24″ x 30″, for example, it weighed 2.3KG (over 5 Lbs) once it was boxed up. You are talking about 6 lbs, maybe more, for a package of that size, depending upon how it is packed.
Laura, I ship in cardboard all the time, and they have never told me it cannot be insured. For smaller ones (in the US) I use Priority Mail insured, and their boxes are just cardboard….

i ship in uline box measuring 42x36x6 – packing weight runs about 10-13 pounds (i sandwich my canvasses further in cardboard / filler so they are “floating” in the box) and is considered too large to ship via usps and fedex treats it as if it were 50 lbs due to size. most of my shipments tend to go cross country (i’m on the west coast) and lately my charges have run $47-49 for fedex home delivery with signature release.
i won’t ship that size internationally – too large.
May 5, 2004 at 2:28 pm #1030542I shipped a 30×40 on masonite to texas last week for $35 UPS. , the USPS price was 3x’s that. It weighed 17 pounds, but UPS charges the 75 pound rate at that size.

TerryMcClary.comMay 5, 2004 at 2:36 pm #1030538I just shipped a 30 x40 and I made my own box… I charged the customer $45 because I buy hard board to make the box. I wrap the painting in a foam sheet ( I don’t know what to call it, it’s flexible) and put cardboard corner protectors on the edges and then sandwich it between the hardboard which is cut 41 x 31. Then I take ultra heavy duty duck tape ( you can buy different thicknesses) and wrap it around the edges creating the side of the box several thicknesses. The canvas is only 3/4 inch think, so it is plenty of protection. It is a tight fit so the canvas is secure. The cost was 22.10 to ship ups, but it would have been $27 to ship Priority Mail. UPS allows up to $30 if the total measurements of the package is no more than 108 inches.

Visit my auctions!May 6, 2004 at 5:33 am #1030550I’ve shipped 30×40 internationally with no problems. As long as you clearly display the prices, so buyers don’t get a fright. After packing mine up properly they weigh around 5.3kg (12lbs) and the price is still reasonable. Maybe that’s the UK postal service though.
I close my eyes to see.May 6, 2004 at 10:31 am #1030548a lot of countries have size restrictions e.g. australia won’t accept anything from usps (or maybe from everyone) exceeding 79″ (length x 2 width x 2 depth).
if you want to make your own box/container, you can probably ship via USPS priority with just the balloon charge (treating pkgs 84″-108″ as if they weigh 15 lbs) and without insurance i think it’s $27-$28 x country (US). the 30×40 might just make it under 108″.
May 6, 2004 at 11:36 pm #1030546Well all I can add is that I goofed Once. I had a large painting and charged 35$ for shipping. I emailed the buyer and told him that the shipping seemed high and if I over estimated I would refund him. So I packed it in a 44 x36 box and it cost 66$ to ship from East to West Coast… a long trip but.. I thought I got ripped off totally. So anyway, I email him and tell him that I’ve sent it and that the extra shipping is my own fault that I don’t expect it, but if he feels the urge he can always email me more money. NICE GUY! He emails me the entire shipping. This type of thing always restores my faith it people.
Anyway, that was from UPS. Is Fedex really cheaper for the big stuff?
So my best advice is get a shipping chart, don’t rely just on measurements on line. I asked UPS for a chart of what is oversize 1,2,3 and they gave me a nice one with diagrams. And after almost a year of shipping stuff, I finally figured out length + girth after choosing to ignore it for so long. You should ask whoever you ship with for the same information so you don’t have to guess. I have another big canvas like yours but I think I’m just gonna roll it and save us all some time and energy. I have faith that most people can learn to use a staple gun without shooting their eye out, so I’ll send the stretchers along with instructions.
Chow!
HeatherMay 7, 2004 at 3:41 pm #1030549heather,
i looked into ups once and i must have decided it was more expensive than fedex. fedex has gone up a LOT recently, but i can’t make heads or tails out of it – they have a more convenient drop-off location for me.the 30×40 stretched canvasses are a PAIN – the box is expensive, the sh/i is expensive, it’s physically unwieldy, my car is SMALL. if i had more patience i might make my own container, but there’s already enough to do.
anyone use greyhound for shipping art? i bought an endtable on ebay and it was shipped via greyhound. it was FAST and arrived in great condition and as far as i can tell, it was about $30 to ship. i had to pick it up from the depot, but it worked out OK.
something to consider.
