For both of these I took a reference photo of mine, cropped it and eliminated a couple elements that might be hard. I did a outline minimal sketch on the carton paper and then drew and painted with the brush. it is an enjoyable way to paint.

These have come out very well – particularly the first. The reflections and warmth make for an interesting painting.

I love the looseness of the brushstrokes in the first and the water is excellent. Great colours as always. The colours in the second which depict the arid landscape are beautiful. The road disappearing into the distance adds to a feeling of desolation. Excellent all round, Gary.

Excellent Gary! You did a great job with the greens and reflections in the first and love the colors and road in the second. Both are very well done.

Bright and happy! I want to walk there. Plus something that the physics of water teaches us, it can reflect 90% of the light which impinges upon it (or absorb 90%). This means that reflected colors are slightly more saturated, and slightly darker. Perfect.

“Just for enjoyment”, ours and yours.

What you described is a fun way to paint. Enough guide to not struggle with placement and enough freedom to just paint. Both are very nice.

                            Thanks Christopher.

                            Thanks Christel.

Thanks Trudi. It is easier to have loose brush strokes when drawing accuracy is not such an issue.

Thanks Arnie. I tried not to overthink the reflections, just to paint what I saw in the reference.

Thanks Heather. Water can be a gift or a curse to a painter?

Thanks Wes. The first was drill in how to squeeze a lot of different greens out of a limited palette.

Thanks Terry. Nice to see your work on the Landscape Forum.

Thanks David. “Enough guide to not struggle with placement and enough freedom to just paint.” That about sums it up.

                            Thanks again to all. Gary

Like ’em both, Gary!! I particularly like the first with it’s great capture of light and shadow and I like the reflections in the water a lot! Well done!!

These are both great. They make me want to have another go at landscapes.

Thanks Randy. They definitely were fun to do.

Thanks Tammy. Welcome to the Landscape Forum. I look forward to seeing your work here.

Thanks Michael. The American West has some interesting greens. I need to make more of an effort to learn them.

                                        Thanks again to all. Gary

Love the reflections in the first painting Gary. Your trees look so perfect, not like the wind blown ones we have here in the Highlands of Scotland. Really love your Utah painting feels like I am there when viewing it. A nice hot place to be away from winter!
