Re: Snail on Shale

Great composition! -- especially well done is the snail's trail --

But, I do think the antennae are too colorless -- they look like they don't belong to that animal -- and their prominence sort of makes the whole snail look unfinished

Snails are surprisingly fun to work on, nicely done.

Yes Delo -- they hold the pose really well and often for long periods of time! lol

Clair
The actual snail had this translucent white color.
I tried to achieve that look. There’s no Prismacolor “Translucent Snail” in the 150 pack. Maybe they need a 151 pack?

Re: Snail on Shale

I do find their tan shades lacking. I never seem to have exactly the right pencil for tans/creams.

Re: Snail on Shale

Marc --
You are not making a biologically correct illustration of a snail for a "Guide to Snails".

You can do whatever you want to add artistic merit and/or punch to your drawing/painting.

Clair, I fully realize that, but I was GOING for the translucent antenni.
Ref photo below.
This guy was on the slate entry way to my apartment building in Queens. I would see them there quite often.

Re: Snail on Shale

Good job. I like the textured look and the expanse of background highlights the small size of the subject. Very nice.

I'm nature-journalling my way through the mini wildlife in my garden and a garden snail is next on my list, so this is of particular interest to me!
