The method can be reversed if you want a soft edge on the outer part of the petal. Apply a band of clear water around the petal's edge, then work the paint towards the band of water, eventually joining the two. An additional brushstroke may be required to get a smooth, even, faded soft edge.
Small spots of masking fluid were added to some petals in order to produce blemishes. Drops of stronger color added while wet.
