Artistic Influences

As I have been doing some reading about the works of the Impressionists, as well as a few others and recently saw the Carvaggio Exhibit in this area, I began to think about how these artists have been an influence on my own work.
So, I pose a question to my fellow WC members: what artist(s) famous or not, or artistic movement has strongly influenced your work?

Re: Artistic Influences

Dear laneart (Welcome to WC!)

I am somewhat surprised that this question did not lead to any responses as of yet. Of course the "Creativity" boards tend to be among the slowest on WC! (you might think about cross-posting the same question on the cafe Guerbois). It is also an odd fact that the weekends tend to be the slowest.

As an artist, I have long hated the usual pretentious artist's statement in which one is expected to explain the "meaning" of one's art, rather than allow the viewer to come to his or her own conclusions. On the other hand, as a lover of art history I am quite open about the sources of my inspiration. It is somewhat late this evening and I'm facing a long day ahead of me, but I will surely re-vist this post and toss about some ideas concerning where I have drawn inspiration.

Re: Artistic Influences

As I'm a bit of a comic geek comic book artists have influenced my style to some extend. Simon Bisley in particular. Generally speaking I think I'm inspired/influenced by most of the art I get a look at, as I can always find something unique and interesting whatever level of the artist.

I care less about genre/art school/tradition in that respect and try to be like a sponge sucking up whatever good I find.

Re: Artistic Influences

Thank you for your responses, razzar and stlukesguild, as for my self, I think my art is influenced according to subject matter, if that makes sense. My landscapes have a definite Impressionistic "feel" to them; paintings of people, figures and the occasional still life are influenced by the "Old Masters".....mostly, my work does not resemble anyone else's, as I paint what I choose and how I want to paint it.
As soon as I can down-size examples of my work to WC size requirements, I will post some of my work.
I am just becoming acquainted with the vast resources here as well.

Re: Artistic Influences

Originality is the best way to travel. With that said, whatever we do artwise (and other) is a blend of what we have seen, felt and heard. If we regard humans as beings of interpretation we add something of our own to it, hence it becomes unique.

I agree Razzar.
I think people become "extensions" of all they have seen, known, felt or heard.
As artists, we are able to express or illustrate this in the medium of our choice......if I am interpreting your meaning correctly(?)

Re: Artistic Influences

I'm getting old, so I guess everything I have experienced since I was born until now has influenced me (and I haven't been idle for some seventy years) one way or another. Some have been art movements, a few of which I now tend to think of as fads, such as pop art and abstract expressionism. Most things haven't been art movements--a ray of early morning light, a path that disappears then reappears, a sleeping cat's half open eye, its paw, the human condition, sad eyes, a painting by Sorolla or Sargent, a listing boat, a single flower, a Rodin sculpture, Rembrandt, the shimmering hues in a Monet haystack, a crashing wave, the angle of a knee, neck, or ankle, light bouncing off hair, the colors in the trunk of a tree, the forms of rocks, wet streets, blowing snow and drifts, krumholtzed trees, shifting fog, twilight...in no particular order..

Re: Artistic Influences

You did

In a sense we are the spice of life. We can bend, interpret or duplicate reality as we see fit. Maybe art is merely a display of power?

Re: Artistic Influences

The Futurists. Walt Disney. Lucio Fulci films. Escher and Dali. Mix those 5 together and it sums up my work style quite fairly. If you do not know the works of the futurists, I would heartily point you towards them as they really changed my outlook on both creativity and what could be considered 'art'

Re: Artistic Influences

My biggest inspiration in my entire life was an artist by the name of Yoshi taka Amano. He's not too well known in the general art community but in the video game industry, he's practically a household name. His art combined with my nerdom is what made me want to draw.

I haven't been over here for several days, but thank you all for your responses.
One of the great things about an on-line discussion is the diversity and variety of thoughts and ideas from global participants.
Thanks again.

Re: Artistic Influences

Hiroshige, Hokusai, and Amano definitely have had a heavy influence.

Amano's watercolours are just amazing. Not only his Vampire Hunter D, but also his Magic Flute are worth a look.

Also Cezane, Qui Bashi.

Medival illumination.
