David, Very nice job on the Autumn path! Lots of energy and movement!

nkoconnell, Welcome! This is an absolutely top-notch painting! I can't imagine what the image in your head was like, but it couldn't have been more beautiful than this!

sbrunner, Welcome aboard! I really like the composition that you have cropped from the photo ref! The trees are all nicely done and the colors vibrant! One would never know that you took a 20 year break! Beautifully done!

Steven, welcome!! You must live near me. Wonder if I already know you??
This is a lovely piece. Great colour harmony and lots of depth to that main tree. Hope you stay with pastels now and join us often! The spotlight is great for learning, or just throwing off the rust of 20 years!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2011 - Fall Colors

Don: Thank you your kind comments and encouragement, the support from family and friends is great, but to hear kind comments from someone of your skills mean a lot.

Ruthie: The same goes for you as for Don thank you for the kind comments love your work too. I am not that far from you about 45 miles just a short walk really

I started up a few weeks ago just doing pencil and ink sketches and I think that has helped with values my first love is portraiture and figures so naturally my first pastel was a seascape my second a still life and the third as you see a landscape go figure.
Love everybody's work on this spotlight so inspiring it made me a little nervous posting my own efforts.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2011 - Fall Colors

Purr thanks for your comments on my pumpkin. Ruthie, PURR... oh yes I was thinking of Charlie when I started getting out all the brights and bringing in hues that would enrich the ones I saw. The colors in the shadow were what made me want to paint the pumpkin.

David, your walk in the park is great. I love the way the road lays flat, the scene has beautiful depth. Well done!

nkoconnell, your fiery autumn trees are beautiful. I love the contrast with the darker evergreens behind them and the way you unified the colors. Gorgeous!

Ruthie, wow! Your dried leaves are fantastic. This reminds me of Asian paintings, only done in pastels. I love the soft and hard edges, the subtle color and value shifts. That's incredible. The design, they seem to be dancing.

Looking good, sbrunner! I like your foliage, the brilliant oranges with that area of green that hasn't turned yet is so charming. That grabs my eye every time I glance at this. Very cool the way you did the bare trees too. Keep painting!

It may help to use a bit of violet in background distant mountains, that's my only suggestion.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2011 - Fall Colors

Hi
Barriespapa: thank for your comments loved your version of the walk ref I looked at doing the full scene then saw the tree on the left loved the colours and decided to concentrate on that.
Robert: Thank you for your kind comments loved the colours in your pumpkin. Of course your right about the mountain needing more, thought so when working on it but was distracted by something needed changing and forgot to go back to it. Hopefully just a newbie mistake I wont repeat but doubt it lol.

Nice, David! I love the texture on the flowers and the shadows of the plants up at the top. You got some beautiful textures in this painting.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2011 - Fall Colors

David, wow! A burst of colour. That's what I like
Irma, this is fab! very rounded and I really like the few strokes which make up the background.

I've done a crop of the flaming tree one. I flipped the boat to make it point to the tree. This is about A4 size on pastelmat. It was fun to do but, boy, do I need to get a handle on trees! What a shame I was unable to do the JV class because of the timing
