Re: The Spotlight - September 2011 - Form

Ruthie- The ballerina painting is beautiful! You captured the pose. Your limited palette pear painting shows what can be done with a few sticks. They glow nicely. Well done on both paintings. I am so glad you made time to paint.

Jim- Good job on the glass. Not an easy subject, but as Don said, just paint the shapes and don't even think it is glass. Just like trees.

Judi- You are painting! Good shading on the pears. They are the magical fruit. No pear is shaped the same and they have so many neat colors. You can never go wrong painting pears.

David- I think the trees are looking better. The reflections look good too. Just keep at and take the advice of the helpful painters we have here. I find it is trial and error and you just have to keep painting. Good luck and have fun.

Here is my stab at the landscape. I cropped and removed a tree. I don't think I left enough room at the bottom of the painting. Oh well, live and learn. I did a FC pastel and alcohol under painting and used a variety of softies on top. It is painted on 10 x 8 Wallis paper. Thanks for looking. C & C welcomed.

Here is the under painting.

thanks, Doug. And you 'done good' on your landscape. The trees especially are well done!

David, I think your Pond painting came out just fine. Your gradation from a darker to lighter blue works well, but without any other "clues" as to perspective, it is hard to create depth on the water's surface. That's why Charlie's suggestion of a little surface ripple or two is always a good idea with still water. If there were waves, you could make the waves get smaller as they get more distant as a perspective clue, but since the water is still you don't have that option. But, you can do the same with water ripples.

Ruth, Great job on the pears! Everything about it is just right!

Doug, Nice job on the Pond painting! Interesting underpainting - thanks for showing us! Glad you cropped, too! Good reminder to everyone that that can re-compose the photos into their own compositions!

Don

Dougwas: Great painting on the pears; I like your simplistic view of the cloth, wished I'd done that. Vibrant colors on your landscape; very nice surealistic approach to it!
Ruthie: Beautiful painting of the ballerina; wonderful intricate details! great job on the pears!
mij: Beautiful graduations of lights and darks on the glass!
judibelle: beautiful colors on the pears, nice lights and darks, and I also like your simplistic view of the cloth also!

The rocks were looking kind of lonely.

I finally moved to Frankfurt, Germany and brought my pastels along. Funny that the first scene painted was from the American Southwest. But, am sure will have plenty of opportunity to paint beautiful Germany.

Missed everyone since last fall... David

Greenbrier33- Gorgeous work on the desert scene!
Barrespapa: beautiful work on the glass very nice reflections and use of lights and darks!

I reworked the cloth on the pears, and I'm satisfied with it now. Also did the desert scene very early this morning . On white pastelmat 7"x 4" with various softies.

Re: The Spotlight - September 2011 - Form

Hello! Long time lurker, first time spotlight try-er. I went with the pears, because I wanted to practice my color blending skills. As with others, the folds in the cloth in the background had me stumped. At least I tried?

david....your glass cannister piece is very nice. Its so life-like. To me, glass seems hard to render. Any shiney surface has me stumped.
