Since I am right-handed, I have mine positioned slightly in front of me and to the left, with the light shining at an angle towards the right. That way my arm does not cast a shadow on my work. A left-handed person would want the setup going the other direction.
The architect lamp is really helpful because it allows for positioning the light directly above the work space. Hope that helps a little.
