Arrow Different Strokes: March 2011

Welcome to the March, 2011 edition of Different Strokes.

If you would like to host a Different Strokes, please see the Schedule thread here - it is a sticky near the top of the main forum page.

Please read the guidelines below carefully.

GUIDELINES:
On the first of each month a reference photo will be posted in a thread entitled "Different Strokes".

Each member interested in taking the challenge will create a painting using the chosen reference (whole or cropped) and on the 20th of each month participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for discussion within this thread, finished or not.

We all paint from the same reference but sometimes a host may include additional images for help, clarity or guidance.

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 20TH OF THE MONTH.**

At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

Artwork can be any size on any surface but MUST be acrylic. Monthly references will be selected by the guides and moderators (but please note the additional comment above).

**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ...... that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!

THIS MONTH'S REFERENCE:

I must admit I have an ulterior motive for choosing this photo. I have been meaning to paint it for a while now. It is of Nice harbour. Amongst the luxury yachts at one end (just visible in the top right) there are the boats of the local fishermen. This is my photo, so please feel free to use as you wish.

Larger version - RIL.

Well I know how much you all like a challenge, Maureen

I'm favouring a crop of the bottom left hand corner but then again I've never been one to forgo a challenge.

I have uploaded a larger image into the ref library so as soon as it is approved, i will let you know. Unfortunately it is not a very large picture, so I hope it is sufficient for your needs.

Re: Different Strokes: March 2011

Oh golly, I love boats but this one is a nightmare!!!Thank goodness , we can interpret it any way we like. Are you REALLY intending to paint every boat , Marion??? I know Nice harbour and it is delightful, especially the sunshine. At the moment that is a UFO in Hamburg!!! Thank you so much for hosting and for the huge challenge!! I will give this my best. I think what I love most about these challenges, is the huge variety of styles. So looking forward to this one.

Re: Different Strokes: March 2011

Marion - I've approved the larger version in the RIL and added a link to your first post - at the bottom ... and the size is fine, the resolution looks good

Chammi - quick, get a pic of the UFO!! ...... another DS reference already!

Great, thanks a lot! I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do with it (or if I'm going to do it this month), but I'm sure it'll involve cropping.

No sunshine here either

I'm just contemplating how I can simplify the mid ground. The background I think will be fairly simple - mainly just colour with a slight hint of the buildings.
Probably will end up cropping though.

Thanks Maureen for approving that pic so quickly and putting in the link.

Re: Different Strokes: March 2011

At first I looked at it and thought it'd just be too complicated even if I cropped it as I'm not sure I could paint the water wherever I'd have to imagine how it'd look in place of the other boat. I think I figured out what I want to do though, so... I'm in! *excited*
