large failure
I found this board had too rough of a pumice layer when out in the field unhappy with results, it was taking too much pastel to fill in
back in studio(rainy day) before completely wiping out I used some turps on the background and sky, then reworked and cropped
24 x 36" it is a little more pleasing than the first version but I am putting a smoother pumice layer on current supports

Re: large failure
Dan: I like the result. Love the abstract bands of fore-ground middle etc. And the colors are unusual and rich. Enjoyed.
Hey I've been there. I've oversanded quite a few surfaces and they eat the heck out of the sticks, also; a really unpleasant working experience. But one must plow through.

Re: large failure
You sure rescued that painting nicely, Dan. The light on the rocks is really beautiful. What are you using to make your supports - pumice and gesso or something else?

Re: large failure
Hi Derek that rough pumice was eating the sticks with poor results
Thanks Donna I use pumice and gesso but am having a harder time finding a FF pumice, I found that soap making suppliers have some but I use a motor and pestle to grind it finer

Re: large failure
Dan --- This is a great save, not at all what I was expecting by the title. You can find 4f (very fine) pumice at woodworking suppliers, here is one in Canada. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/pag...90,43040,20059

Re: large failure
hello
- motor and pestle , hmmm .
less than 30 rpm wouldn't compromise anything
by heat
and a bit of marble dust could work ...
the strong f/g colour against the b/g
is a bit outside of what you have been presenting
and it reads well to me = a strong patch of sunlight
creaky floor hardware stores have all but disappeared .
> grab that FF - FFFF wherever you can find it .
>> that's the ' Rainbow ' brand , no ?

Re: large failure
Hi Df! I know what you mean, I have done that myself - - - -created a much to aggressive ground with my pumice, then when you are out painting it seems you can't use enough pastle to fill an area, and pastle goes dusting off everywhere!! Last time I did that, I went ahead and used my watercolors fist on the ground, making an underpainting in violets that would hide under the pastels---especiallly in the shadowed area's---then finnished with pastel and it seemed to hold the painting togetner for me. I used watercolor paper/ 300lb. as well This was plein-air out in Nevada last fall. The rough texture really broke up the pastel strokes, and made the surface look painterly - - -not many hard edges at all. Just my thoughts, and wasn't trying to take over your post---just wanted to show you what I ment, and see if I understood you right as well----I have some pumice that is really very gritty, Mattise dry mediums, in a small jar---Have you seen those? I am not sure how I would take and make the particles finer, although I do have a large granite morter and pestle-----would that work?? I do enjoy your posts and love your work!!!

Re: large failure
I haven't tried making my own surface yet but it seems interesting. I like the results and cannot see you having any problems but you would know best!

Re: large failure
I don't think it is a failure I like the moody bg and the warm broken fg. I can imagine the surface was a beast though!

Re: large failure
The texture you have all utilized is just stunning. And very inspiring. It might be time to play with that true grit.
Thanks
