new steel painting, playin' with fire

I started this a long time ago, but the boyfriend's birthday is next week so I decided to finish it up.

For most of the summer he had a crash helmet with sparklers stuck in it on stage and had great fun running around with his head on fire (got a great big scar on my wrist from lighting those things). As pictures started popping up, I thought it'd be cool to do one of my metal paintings with the fireworks scratched into the surface so they would glow.

Turned out a bit better than expected. The different angles of the scratches make it sort of animated depending on the light source.

6x6", oil on steel. Just black and white, all the background colors are done with a torch on the steel plate.

That's really cool! I am sure he'll love it How do you prime steel? Or do you have to prime it at all?

It'll rust if it's exposed to moisture, so it's coated with Rustoleum clear spray first.

Looks great, I can just imagine the hologram effect from the scratched-in sparklers. The blowtorch effect is also unique and adds to the piece.

Supercool! Good job on the teeth--teeth can be tough. Also, I like the reflections on the goggles. Very cool!
