Smile Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

2012 is in the Chinese horoscope the year of the dragon, and even though their horoscope does not start until February, a new year begins today. So I thought this month we could dedicate it to the representations of dragons.

Dragons are mystical figures from our past. In Asia they are a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. In Easter Europe, some are seen as benevolent, and some evil. Indeed Dragons have been the subject of mythological stories, and in many cultures dragons are viewed as representing the primal forces in nature and the universe. They can alternately breathe fire, poison or ice. These abilities demonstrate that they are both creators and destroyers.

So for this challenge you are to depict your favorite dragon or dragons!

This is an activity thread for artists of all experience levels, and that work in any medium. Being traditional painting, drawing, or digital art. Since this is a group activity, we can pool our knowledge and resources, and grow as artists in a fun, no-pressure atmosphere. No critiques unless specifically asked for. Please, no harsh critique! The intent is to have fun, try new things, and experiment.

I look forward to seeing your work!

Actully chinese new year falls on 23rd January this year. it has a different date each year. Think this challenge might push e to at least do a new dragon piece of art.

oh happy new year people ^^

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

Maria, that's a totally Chinese dragon. Good job.

Chaosia, looking forward to seeing your dragon.

Of all creatures, dragons is the hardest for me because there is no live creatures photos to follow.

I took some inspiration from Boris Vallejo's claw, Luis Royo's girl and dragon but my own new composition.

"The guardian"

Stillman & Birn Delta white spiral bound 180 lb rough texture watercolor sketchbook 9x12 inch

I sketched it nicely and the moment I put Daniel Smith watercolor on it, GASP, I could hardly see my lines? I had to look for my claws all over again.

I put color pencil all over but the rough texture just wasn't conducive to a smooth application. Thinner wash didn't help either.

Mungyo oil pastel and Sennelier oil pastel to the rescue.

I don't need photoshop this time because the colors scanned quite true.

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

just so happens I'm working on a dragon piece right now-- this is all from imagination - I'm coloring it with oil pastels but it's quite a challenge.... not sure how successful I'll be

Here's one I did a long time ago, I know this is a monthly challenge of art for the month but thought I'd post anyways for inspiration

and one more

Wow, Paul, what a beautiful piece for the colored one. Any chance you could show a larger version of it please? I want to see the details. It's so good. Is it oil pastel too with the same method? Please tell.

Looking forward to see you color your first piece too.

Thank you, Maria, for your comment. If I had used smoother paper, it would have been slightly better.

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

What a great thread and such awesome dragons already. I usually hang out in other parts of WC but Sandra mentioned this challenge and I just had to come over and check it out and join in. I love dragons.

Here is a quick pen and wash sketch I did a short while ago of one of my many dragon ornaments. I will do some of the others and post them too.

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

Sandra great job on your dragon too, (I forgot to comment haha!!) I like the initial watercolor background, interesting....

yes, this was one of the first where I tried the oil pastels, but it was at this time I realized I didn't know what I was doing with oil pastels or how to use them so that's about when I joined wetcanvas and started doing the oil pastel challenges and learning/ observing the work of everyone on that forum... I learned tons and feel like I'm starting to understand how I can use oil pastels a little more effectively now...

here is the larger version
On this one I did a gadgety thing in photoshop, (the blur thing)-

Jacqui your dragon is cute... like a little pet

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

Jacqui, I agree. Your dragon looks like it had a long day running around and is quite contented to rest by someone's feet. Very cute.

Paul, thanks for the bigger version. I do like oil pastel's sketching quality. Not everyone needs to be solid packed of pigment. The red on the body works very well in this one, blurred or not. Fearsome dragon!!

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

Glad you liked my little pet dragon. I did this one last night from imagination. I rarely draw from imagination so I'm pretty pleased with the effort but hope to improve more in future.

A4 size, watersoluble graphite pencil and waterbrush.

I am having fun, I am going to do some more of these...

Re: Fantasy/Sci-Fi Monthly Challenge JANUARY - Dragons!

This one is totally mine. After practicing 2 dragons, I could make one up finally.

Here's my original.

Academie Heavyweight sketchbook 70 lb 8.5 x 11 inch

Kimberly watercolor pencils and Prismcaolor artstix and wash. And Faber Castell polychromos blue pencil.

Here's my photoshopped one.

Sandra I really like your graphitint dragons. I love the one you created yourself. He is wonderful clutching his precious pearl. Great colours.
