Great selection of references! I have my favorite photo already selected. I hope to find more time to paint this month that I did in Dec.

Fantastic images! If these don't get the creative juices going nothing will!
Tough to choose from these.

Re: January Landscape Challenge 2012

Thanks Kathleen, Marcus, Moscatel, Cheryl (welcome to WetCanvas!), Jean, Dwayne, Dan, Barbara, Bill! Today I started on the saguaro and jackrabbit. One of my NY resolutions is to do more landscapes...still keeping the one resolution going I made in 2006 to paint or draw every day. Sure makes a big difference!

Re: January Landscape Challenge 2012

Here's my attempt at the Riudoso River photo. I'm not happy with it. I think the problem is that I failed to develop a COI, so everything is rather a jumble. The tall grass wound up competing for attention, and I couldn't figure out how to stop that. Does anybody have any suggestions? (I.e., C&C solicited.)

Re: January Landscape Challenge 2012

Sue, that is a terrific job. I hesitated doing that subject because of the complexity; you simplified it well.

I think you did have a center of interest:

Rather than toning down the grasses, I'd kick up the COI a notch with harder edges and more value contrast. Maybe even more than I did here.

BTW, it's alway easier for me to critique little things like this than to create a good piece like you did!

Re: January Landscape Challenge 2012

Thanks, Bill. I didn't really intend for my COI to be one small rock, but I think you're right, and that's what happened. Oops. Another oops I just noticed is that I have a rock floating in mid-air in the upper right quadrant of the painting. And I don't like that branch even though my husband insisted I just had to put that in. That one will be hard to fix, though.

Sue
