Artists I admire

I had posted before about Tibor Nagy and have run across Romona Youngquist and really like her work. I thought I would post a link here. She really does shadow and light well. I am going to study her work and try and learn from it:

Re: Artists I admire

Keith,

You're welcome. I couldn't find this lady's website but her facebook site has some great stuff on it. It makes a person, or at least me, realize how far I am from being a good painter. Her work is fantastic:

Re: Artists I admire

Thanks for the link, my favorite paintings of her are the poppies fields.
Often she uses very dark shadows, may be too dark too my eyes, but it's a very personal thing.
She is a wonderful artist. I understand you love her works.

I wish you an Happy New Year and a wonderful and creative painting year.

Re: Artists I admire

Dwayne, I think what strikes me most about Youngquist is she is doing something with traditional landscape that is different. So many artists are painting landscapes these days which all look the same to me, some kind of holdover from impressionism era that, while lovely, do not say anything new or different or unique. In many ways, most landscape paintings being created currently are extremely boring and all look like they are painted by 3 or 4 artists total, IMO...

Youngquist adds something to her work which pushes it beyond the mundane, the same ol' same ol'. It's fresh and lively, yet you can see that she's drawing from older masters. Very enviable works!

I did not know her, so I curiously opened the link: beautiful landscapes without being boring, as has been said. Thank you for the wonderful link!

Re: Artists I admire

These landscapes appear tranquil and quiet to me; nothing is happening in these rural scenes. When you are a stressed citizen and love tranquillity these paintings might be right for you.
I also like these paintings but I have difficulties to find out what is special or extraordinary. Maybe it is hidden in details or in slight differences?
At a whole the paintings appear realistic for me without superfluous detail.

You're welcome, Pierre. Happy New Year. I like the poppies as well.

I think that part of it is that she always has a heavy contrast between light and shadow. She uses a palette knife a bit to make generalizations instead of fussy work. I like the color she gets as well.

For me it's her work with light and the colors that she mixes. I agree, not too much detail.

Re: Artists I admire

I like the work but I would like to see a bit of mid range values here and there. Some of her use of light is confusing to me, particularly in some of the poppies. She has a nice way with extreme values. Nice use of Notan with dominant dark or light value and ni e palette as well.

Re: Artists I admire

Notan is a design tool ,a way of painting dark and light. I studied Notan for about two years and it was very useful for me. It is a way of condensing and simplifying values, making them easier to understand.

I like both of these artists, thanks for the introduction.
