Re: * Eclectic Cafe * (chat or share non ab/con work)

One of the things I struggle with is coming up with reasons or ways to get some texture in my work. I know there are many ways to go about doing it and that it can be the main focus of many a great painting, but does anyone have some tips or more explanation for using texture, besides that it is fun and interesting to look at? I would love to see some wip tutorials about it if anyone is up for it...

One of my favourite textures is crushed egg shell Tim.

Use a layer of heavy gel. Press a generous portion of crushed eggshell into the gel. Wait. Tip the support over and brush off the egg shell that is sitting on top and not adhered to your support. Seal with some GAC 100 and gesso. Then layer your pigments over the eggshell.

The egg shell is under the purple/pink transparent gel. This one is called Budda-bang-shushhhh-TING-ahhhh and is part of my "Onomatopedia" series:

Here is a detail shot:

Re: Something New ( maybe)

thanks for the link, I like his paintings.
I never did an abstract painting and I'm wondering how to begin, are there are any interesting books or video for beginners ?

I think the wird abstract can describe a whole host of different styles from the semi figurative to the totally abstract. I dont have a recommendations for books but try this as an experiment:

Start with an inanimate object, a chair or couple of chairs for instance. Look not at the chair itself but the spaces around it, te patterns it creates as legs and supports etc. the begin to sketch those out
. Think abbout how tightly you may want to crop into the area you are describing and be free with colour.

Just an idea

Re: Something New ( maybe)

Mark,

This is a wonderful painting!!! The depth, angles, and light and done very well. I have been wanting to do a painting similar to this myself. I think you have inspired me to finally give it a try.

I can get lost in this painting. So many places to explore.

nice job,
jumper

Re: * Eclectic Cafe * (art and non-art chat or share non ab/con work)

Thanks Rick. Very cool idea to use egg shells. Do you use the innards for anything besides eating too? Egg tempera?

Thanks for the link mark mark. Interesting city interpretations.

Question Any Installation Artists Here?

If there are any artists here that work with or have worked with installation art and are okay with me asking a couple of questions about their work and their approaches then I'd really appreciate it.

I'd rather ask questions here and include primary research in my final major project than to include secondary research. I'd really appreciate the help and I'd love to learn a bit more about the whole thing

Re: * Eclectic Cafe * (art and non-art chat or share non ab/con work)

Quite some time ago, I posted about a mural that I took part in, that was designed and coordinated by local artists Lewis Lavoie, Paul Lavoie, and Phil Alain. The unveiling was yesterday and it turned out to be quite spectacular, so I thought I'd share the link to it:

http://www.muralmosaic.com/cultivatelife.html

My panel is 64 (10th column and 3rd row).

This trio of artists (art directors) have done quite a number of these mural mosaics now - across Canada, and recently in the US as well. I'm always impressed with how the murals turn out.

They were eaten. I haven't experimented with egg tempera at all.

That's what I thought Rick.

Any abstracters that sell, would you care to enlighten me on what types of people buy abstracts, young, old, rich, etc. I am trying to pinpoint some sort of an audience to get people interested in my work. Thanks.
