Band Aid Flag

Hello everyone,

Ive only posted in the mixed media forum a few times. Much of my work is "mixed media" This image is a flag that I constructed and painted on. The background is black glass. It was created in 1999 (pre 9/11). These are childrens band aids and childrens stickers which contain specially selected designs. Some have Goofy and Micky Mouse, others hot dogs and hamurgers. You will even see a band aid that contains a globe with a small printed band aid on it. That particular band aid has text on it which reads "heal the world" On top of this text is a childs sticker which is a jet fighter. All the band aids were selected to represent my notion of the United States.

Some of the other concerns that I had were referencing the way flags have been depicted in the past. Realistcally painted , waving in the wind, and also flat like a bumber sticker such as Jasper John's three flags. I was happy that this seemed to be a combination of the two.

All comments welcome.

Very cool, Mike! I'm glad you showed the closeup, too -- did you also use paint on the band-aids?

Very Cool indeed. The designs on the bandaids are like little stories and I like the overpainting.

Hi Mike,

Wow! Really interesting idea and very effective. The closeup shows a lovely texture with the painterly marks stroked over the top; which conveys the message to the viewer without being too literal.

Well Done!

It would be really great to see a lot more of your work here.

Cheers Dahzl
