Looking up and down Third St (x-post)

Looking up and Down Third Street (X-post)

I took this reference photo, cropped it to this:
then I took the crop and changed it to high contrast B&W in PS8:

then did a thumbnail on a scrap piece of mat board:

Then I did a blue underpaint and sketched it out full size (24 x 48) in burnt umber/white:

and now am ready to create a masterpiece like this:

Richard Diebenkorn, Cityscape I,

at least that is what the instructor is trying to teach me...

C&C always appreciated, Greg

Boy, you've taken on a challenge to paint that photo, but it looks like you're off to a good start!

this is very beautilful, you can just feel the energy flowing in the painting (the bigger one) the smaller study is also nice but not nearly as great as the big one for me :P mind i ask you how you did that scratching speed line effect?

andartarius: Thanx 4 looking!
The scratched line was from a 2" basting brush I bought just for this project.
Yes, a flat basting brush.
I just got the tips wet a very little and pulled.
It was an experiment that gave me an unexpected effect - a sort of movement such as vehicles might make.
I'm not sure I could duplicate it.
I found I had to keep washing the brush and thoroughly drying it each time, it tends to get soggy quickly.

I feel the entire street needs to cover more of the blue underpainting which means I would lose the streaked effect... not sure what to do yet. this is not due until Wed so I have time to study it more.

Greg

Finished?

Trying to avoid getting into too many details. Always glad to hear C&C, this is not due until Wed class.

OKeekat: Thanx so much for the comment. I wanted the sign to be recognisable.

Reverse: This took longer than I expected, it was time consuming to only lay a light layer at a time and still leave the right amount of the previous layers exposed. Thanx for commenting
