A project this weekend, from a drawing a few months ago. I have been inspired by a wonderful book, Drawn to Stitch, which explores the crossover of drawn line, form and then how it translates into fiber. So in my Fiber Art journal, I have a series of drawings, largely from nature, that I am now working with.
This is "Fence Post" - machine felting and quilting on grey silk, with quilted background. 8 x 10.
The scanner is flattening it out, as there are two layers of quilting. The fence post is machine felting, then made into a quilt sandwich with the crack lines quilted. I then wet felted roving into a cord, needlefelting it on and adding the shadow. I did not want the shadow to be quilted down like the crack lines. so it goes over the quilting. Then I quilted a simple background. I went REALLY simple, and with no embroidery or bead embellishment, as I wanted the subtle aspect of the machine felted wool to stand out. I then put the fence post section on the background, with more batting to make it puff out a bit. then I hand quilted some of the larger black cracks and knots. The result is a 3D sense, both from the loft of the batting and the the shadowing.
