Robert this is going to be great ... Looks like a tiny tiger ? Or Doppler this evening when I wouldn't let him out into the dark. No. Yours is more friendly.

Re: Gouache Corner August 2011

Nice photos again this month!

The first one of mine was taken in Old Town Albuquerque about four years ago. I really like the man and his guitar, but all the surroundings are so distracting. Crop away! Please take the second one of the pond and play around with it, too. It needs cropping, the color could be saturated, and I think those foreground bushes are a bit of a bother--don't you?

I like the start of the cat, Robert. Explain something--why did you start with watercolor and then go to gouache? I'm so unfamiliar with watercolor that I don't know why that would be an advantage.

Deb, love the style you're developing! This one is quite lovely and strong. Compositionally that little snick of a petal protruding back in from the top corner is essential and effective.

Re: Gouache Corner August 2011

Thanks Annie and Deborah
Deborah I wanted to try this way for a change as watercolor is more staining it doesnt dissolve with the next layers and I wanted to try tranparant gouache layers for depth and volume and add some more opaque here and there no big deal I'm not expert just experiment??

Robert

DebE ... that is a lovely strong painting. Great style!

Looking forward to your experiment Robert. I've been playing with a statue head (again) that I've done in watercolour but have started putting in darks with semi-transparent layers of black gouache. I'll show it if it stays out of the bin.

Hi Lil

You can paint anything you like so long as it's in gouache, go for it and have fun
I've lost my muse lately (due to illness) I'm hoping it'll come back this month...

Re: Gouache Corner August 2011

New here, have been inspired by Roberts gouache paintings (love Panny from the WDE) (and of course my very own fawn)
I love your ref photos especially the fellow playing guitar
this is my first, went out and did a plein air sketch at the lake this wknd, and then used it as a guide to do this, it has a wc underpainting
not transparent as I like, but a learning experience for sure, just got a small set of turners' gouache

Robert you have a masterpiece. You even managed to get some atmospheric perspective.

You gouache artists are making me a believer in gouache.

Re: Gouache Corner August 2011

Arty, hope you join us!

Bonnie, it's nice--wish I could be out there along a lake! One nice thing about gouache is that you can continue to add light to it, just thickening the paint and using more of the white. The forgiveness of gouache is astounding at first--then you start to depend on it...

Robert, you never disappoint. Hal's right--great sense of air in a small area of focus. Very spritely cat. I wouldn't trust it an inch...
