August 2011 Oil Pastel Challenge.
Hi, my name is Paul and welcome to the August challenge.
All the following photo's are mine and are royalty free, so please crop, change, interpret or use the image as you feel fit. Then post it here for us all to see.
I have tried to select a variety of images so I hope you will find some thing you would like to try.
A big thank you to Tatiana for hosting last month.
So onto this months selection.
I managed to get my daughter to pose for me in her white hat.
A yellow flower from the garden.
A stuffed cloth snowman.
A canal in London.
A giraffe.

oooooh lovely giraffe - all those deliciously complex markings - you know what I'm like for taht sort of thing. I have a busy month with relatives staying and weddings and a week in Essex but I WILL try to do at least one - and NOT on a horrid support this time.

Thank you Pat and Hal
Reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/Realistic-Abst...d_bxgy_b_img_c and doing some exercises along the way. There are a lot of interesting thoughts and ideas.

Re: August 2011 Oil Pastel Challenge.
Nice impression of the landscape Vlad, I started off trying to work on speed for my attempt at the Giraffe to see how much i could achieve in an hour, but in the end i spent at least 2 hours maybe 3. Annoyingly most of that was spent just fiddling. I was going to suggest an African landscape in the background but my eyes are getting crossed from staring at the page so i'm calling it done. Oddly the camera made the yellow on his muzzle really stand out, it is much more subtle on the actual piece.
Holbein Oil pastels on coffee coloured, A4 Daler Ingres paper.
Thanks for hosting Paul, i enjoyed doing this ref (even if it was a fiddle fest )

great photos Paul- thanks for hosting this month.
Vlad your sketch is really cool-- really pulls you in
Awesome job on the giraffe Stee71- it gets swallowed up by the background color of the paper though -- but I understand the feeling of allowing yourself a certain amount of time and just letting it go--

Sorry for the delay in responding , but I'm having a bit of trouble with my internet connection. Very temper mental, hopefully it will be fixed soon.
So glad you liked the photo's and I am looking forward to seeing all the great artwork.
Vlad, a lovely sketch, I especially like the spire. you have captured it wonderfully.
Stee, the giraffe looks fantastic. You have really captured him perfectly.
