Help Painting On Canvas Shoes

Hi... I really need help knowing what to prime canvas shoes with before painting on. If I use painting pens, what kind? If I am using regular paint, what kind? I was told to use Hodge Podge or something with a name somewhat like that. I watched on video where the girls was painting on a mixture of glitter with glue, but then she sealed it with something as well.. There seems to be so much to it. ThaNK YOU FOR HELP.....

Re: Help Painting On Canvas Shoes

I painted some Vans slip-ons for a Vans sponsored art show at a local shop. The shoes that were supplied were white canvas. I always use Liquitex professional soft body acrylic paint on my artwork and I just used that in the same manner I would a painting the only difference being I did not prime the shoes. I just applied the acrylic paint directly to the white canvas.

Re: Help Painting On Canvas Shoes

If you want to prime your shoes as you would with canvas, you could just use gesso. I'm not sure about the Mod Podge, though. It is water based and is mainly used with decoupage. It may get tacky when wet, unless you just want the shoes for display. My bottle states that to eliminate tackiness, you need to seal it with an acrylic sealer. There may be other Mod Podge products that I'm not aware of that may be more suitable.

I don't know that you would need to prepare the surface at all, though. When I've used paints on fabric, I didn't. Look around here because I'm thinking someone else addressed this issue not long ago.
